Washboarding?
« on: April 15, 2014, 05:17:06 pm »
I've had bearding to a small degree before but I've never had this.

you can clearly see which one is the more populous hive,
as a side note I found a dead carpenter bee that has been tossed out in front of the stronger of the two hives.

Looks like it could be, they're all facing the same direction and fairly uniform instead of clumped up. Without video and that rocking motion it's hard to tell.

May well be washboarding if they are taking two steps forward and one step back.

This is bearding.......

A lot of people don't like to see this but I do. Only a strong hive will beard like this. This tells me the inside temp is exactly where they want it.
If it was too hot they'd all be at work cooling it off. Too cool and they would be at work warming it up.
This is just my opinion and as I've said, I'm often wrong.

When I see bearding I take it as a sign to add a super.

If Woody is wrong, so am I. I love to see it.

I only add a super if there is a flow on. In a dearth, I leave them to beard. A super is for honey, not lounging, IMHO.

lol, if they're inside the hive I always thought there was something for them to do,
if they are bearding is lounging isn't it?

Bearding may be lounging, but they aren't using one of my supers to do it.

thing about this that has me stumped it is, the bees are all facing away from the entrance not towards the entrance. even the upper entrance they are facing away from it

Hmm in all instances the bees seem to be licking or rubbing their mandibles on the area, scent marking?? Rubbing front legs in same  area don't know, wonder if the have glands in their fore legs, just thinking out loud.
