Title: Longer days
Post by: Zweefer on December 22, 2020, 08:11:32 am
For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the days are starting to get longer as of today! I am looking forward to more sun, as it is dark when I start work, and dark when I get home these days...
Hope everyone is doing well and having a good holiday season!

And, Happy Birthday Zweefer!  a day late.  Do you prefer to call it the Shortest Day or the Longest Night of the year?  If I were you, I would tell everyone that the planets aligned for your birthday this year.

I was still observing orientation flights, in some colonies, on 12/8.  I am curious how long before the queen starts laying again?  I have always heard the generic comment, and have said myself, that she will begin laying again when the daylight hours start to lengthen.
One colony, caught as a swarm last spring, has been an interesting one to watch going into winter.  I observed strong orientation flights up to 12/8 and it's my heaviest hive in regards to population and food stores.   If I had to take a guess, I would say they are Italians.  The Carnolian colonies are light on population and some are very light on food stores.

It’s been a warm year for us as well... not warm enough for the girls to be out, but still in the 20’s. And as you can see, Hardly any snow.  Last time we didn’t have a white Christmas was 2008

Almost time to put out pollen sub here.

It’s a balmy -21 with the wind chill today - we did get a dusting of snow, so it’s not a brown Christmas after all...

It's brown here. what isn't green.  A freezing 50 degrees but the wind chill is about 40.  There are reasons I live in Texas.  The lack of snow is definitely one of them.   It was beautiful earlier this week, cold front hit last night. But I really do need to start pollen sub soon.  I could do a mite treatment but I haven't seen a mite drop from treatment this fall.

Happy belated birthday...and NICE ride  :)

I'm thrilled that the days will start getting longer. It's more difficult every year for me to function when there is less light. DD and I keep talking about whether or not to try a full spectrum light in the house but we keep managing to talk ourselves out of it. My productivity levels just sink horribly when the days are so short.
