Three in one day!!!
« on: May 12, 2014, 03:52:49 pm »
I have a nuc sitting on a stump in my yard baited with comb Sunday (Mothers Day) morning.  By mid-day there seemed to be some interest and by dinner they were moving in.  I checked this morning and they are definitely in defensive mode so patiently waiting a couple of days to check them out and move them into a hive.

Then I went out to take a look at my traps this morning.  Both of them have a lot of activity, and one of them sure let me know I wasn't welcome when I tried to take a closer look at it.  I am calling both of them a success and will remove them in a few days to install into hives.

Trap #1

Trap #2

Since yesterday was the first warm day we've had after a week of rain and cold, I can only guess that they all arrived yesterday.   ;D

That is for swarms, Jen. By the time she moves them, they will be nucs, with eggs and brood. They won't leave.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the nuc, but have a really good feeling about the traps.  There is comb in the nuc that they could be robbing and taking back to the colony.  However there is only LGO in the traps so nothing to rob out and take.  If it turns out that I've only gotten 2 I'll still be very happy, but 3 would be better.  :)

Way to go Jan.Do you have some empty frames in your traps? If you don't they will build crazy comb every where.
I don't know.It was like that when I got here.

Yes I do have frames in them, however the traps are deeper then the frames so I'm expecting to find a mess.  I really need to make shallower traps at some point.

It looks like the bees in the nuc were robbers after all.     I still have high hopes for the traps though.  I have to go out of town for a couple of days, but will open them up when I get back on Friday.

Most of my trap/boxes are deeper than my frames since I use mediums. It is not usually a great mess. A slice of the comb knife across the bottom fixes them up so they will drop in a hive.    ;D
