Title: Drones?
Post by: neillsayers on May 09, 2018, 10:47:50 pm
I've got this hive I started from a swarm I caught on April 28 and hived at that time. Checked it 10 days later and found a lot of eggs all in worker cells. Checked again a few days ago and all cells are capped. All workers-no drones.

Yesterday I was observing the goings-on at the landing board and I observed several drones entering and leaving the hive. These are either visiting mooches from local colonies or they came with the swarm. Hence my question.

Do drones leave the hive with the swarm or stay behind with the parent colony?

Ya know Neil, that never occurred to me! And as I recall, when I'm catching or gathering a swarm, I don't think I've seen drones in a swarm cluster... Good Question!

Some leave with the swarm, and drones drift between hives also so some will get let in that way.

The last swarm I trapped (last week) had a lot of drones with it.  I thought to myself, "Why did you invite these freeloaders along?"  Drones are bad about floating from one hive to another.  I am sure they are in cahoots with varroa mites.  The drones help spread the mites around.  :D

I would apologize for my bad sense of humor ...

... but it wouldn't do any good.  I know I'll just do it again.   :-[

I can visualize drones with little cowboy boots on.
This is what I do with cowboy boots.

We have hijacked Neil's thread.  We don't want riverbee to start scolding us!  She might do a tornado dance or something.  ;D

As far as I'm concerned, I enjoy some of these little rabbit trails. :) One reason why I would make a poor mod. :)
