Wait!!... Wha...  You mean you take the chrysalises out of the jar and hang them on the line???  :o That is soo Cool and Weird!

My blue jays would swoop in under that roof and cart those beauties off and eat them right in front of me!!

So, I am so intrigued with this process Les. Mine simply hatched in gallon glass jars on branches and the lid. Is this a better way? or a much more fun visual way?

Jen, i had a small screened butterfly habitat.  The chysalide were numerous and developing right next to each other.  As you know, once they turn out to a butterfly their wings need room to unfold and pump fluid into them.  If there is anything in the way that could disturb that process, the wings could be damaged or deformed.  i found this great guy on youtube (Mr Lunds Monarchs) and he has been raising Monarchs for years.  I copied the lay out from his video.  This guy is so knowledgable.  You very carefully pull the silk that they laid down for the chrysalis, shape it into a little ball and clip that with the binder clip.  I marked each clip with a sticker with the date they became a chrysalis so I would know when they become a butterfly.

That Is Just So Cool! I didn't breed any monarch's this year. Up to my neck in swarms and splits, grafting queens.

But I read that you have to get those eggs off of the milkweed early in the morning before the spiders get them. Last year I was able to do that. But this year I think the little spiders nested early. I didn't see any eggs this year, but I know they were there cause I could see the tiny left over patch where the egg had been. I'll have to clean all around my wine barrel real well this winter, maybe even put some kind of netting around the milkweed.
