maybe laying workers
« on: August 31, 2019, 09:38:23 pm »
new scenario for me. I have a queenless hive that has 1 side of 1 frame that is covered with drone brood. there is not a single cell of drone brood anywhere else in this hive. so laying workers? what i'm considering doing is: there's a queenright nuc right next to this hive. so my thought is to treat the hive like a laying worker hive & shake them out. then the nuc will go into a single deep hive. the location is close enough that some of the shaken bees might try to move in. some drizzled lemon grass oil in the single deep hive should cover enough odor to keep them from fighting. sound feasible?

What is in the rest of the hive? If no other brood of any kind, then shake them out. They will take up with the nearest hive without any fighting.

Hi Rober  :) that's what my conclusion was last night, but I thought it good to hear what Iddee would recommend.

I was working in some other hives a couple of days ago. We found frames full of worker bee brood, larve, eggs. Then out of nowhere we pull up a frame chock full of solid drone brood, both sides. No drone brood anywhere else in the colony. We thought 'What in the H E Double Hockey Sticks  ???'

Many times a damaged frame will be used for drone brood when not suitable for worker brood.

A lot of male critters may disagree with you on that one. :P

Sorry Charlie.. this time of year those male critters would have promptly gone into the freezer before they were hatched. No Regrets  ;) 8)
