Recipes Using Honey / Re: Goat Cheese Grilled Cheese with Honey
« Last post by The15thMember on January 25, 2024, 01:40:52 pm »
I made one of these for lunch today and it was phenomenal!  I used Pepperidge Farm Swirl, since that's what we had on hand, our homemade chevre, sourwood honey, almonds, and freeze dried rosemary.  I'd do a little less rosemary next time and maybe a stronger nut (or take the time to toast the almonds first).  I totally loved it though; it will definitely be a regular lunch for me going forward.

General Beekeeping / Treated wood
« Last post by Smegma on January 25, 2024, 02:24:29 am »
I came to rest after getting ready for cold weather and I looked at facebook and on one of the bee entries there was a picture of someone that had just finished their winter work cutting out hive boxes.  All of the pictures showed wood with the color of treated wood.  Is the wood treatment used now safe for making bee equipment?

Interesting.  I wonder how accurate it is.  Guess there is only one way to find out.  :)

But I never recommend the microwave when asked how to recrystallize honey.
Agreed, why destroy those delicate enzymes?

But the matchstick test? Has anyone tried this?
I have, and it amounted to nothing for me.  I had some honey once that was kind of suspect, so outside on a drizzly day I ignited some of that honey, some honey I knew was pure, and some 2:1 sugar water, and all burned the exact same way.  I also feel like if it was that easy to tell fake honey from real, we wouldn't have so much adulterated honey sneaking onto the market.

This app was mentioned at last night's local bee club meeting.  It's free to download from Google Play store.  It works by taking a picture of a bee, any bee, and the app will identify which bee it is.  It can also mark your location or you can manually enter your location.  Some native bees only travel a few feet to forage for food.  This would be great to know you have a nest somewhere on your property.

Hmmmm
I watched the video about how to recrystallize your honey and I appreciate that he recommended transferring the honey to a glass container.  But I never recommend the microwave when asked how to recrystallize honey.  But the matchstick test? Has anyone tried this?
