Every Bee Season A New Story
« on: August 23, 2018, 11:44:20 pm »
I just love those queens! I pulled a nuc from one of my hives, then bought a queen from our local queen breeder. I decide to mark my new queen then put her back into her wooden cage before introduction. Too windy outside so I'm in the kitchen. I have my own technique of holding the queen in my soft fist and wait patiently for her to poke her pretty head out between the base of my index finger and thumb, then I mark her.  So! She pokes her head out, I get a perfect pink dot on her beautiful thorax… she pushes out of my hand and flies straight up to the ceiling and then dive bombs straight down into the kitchen sink drain !!!!!! I Am Frozen.. Unblinking.. Staring At The Drain.. Can't Move Can’t Breath. Husband wanders into the kitchen and I lunge at him arms straight out, “DON’T MOVE!” After the longest minute of my entire life, slowly but surely two tiny roving antennae's appear up through the metal part of the drain. I exhale. Slowly she walks her way onto the white sink floor and pauses for a little rest. My right arm takes on a mind of its own and with lightning speed I snatch her up ever so gently before she decides to take flight again. I get her back into her wooden queen cage and reset the cork plug. I watch her for a few seconds to make sure her legs are okay. All is well. Pink dot still perfect! Whew!

That's one to make your heart stop.  With my luck, I would have had dirty dish water in the sink.

HA! :D I usually do have dirty dish water in the sink, I'm in the kitchen all day long so I'm always washing something. What it did teach me, and hopefully I will remember next time, is to put the drain stoppers in place before I work with my bees in the kitchen.

I was holding my breath reading your tale.  Glad you caught and she was sound.  I had one that they just couldn’t seem to release her from the cage.  After three days, i pulled back the screen and she flew off!  There were words coming out of my mouth that would make a drill sgt blush!  But believe it or not she found her way into the hive, whew!

Crackin me up Les. I did something of the sort as well, the queen flew off, I was hands and knees trying to find her, knowing that she couldn't go too far all fattened up and all. I tip toed into the house and ran for this forum. I was told to wait about a half hour that she would  prob circle the yard and get back into her hive. She did!  :)

I can hear her talk show interview now....

The alien stamped me with a color code on my back. I tried to flee for my life but ended up in a dungeon for an Entire Minute!....

BLAH! If that had been me, I would have been staring at the drain, and the wife would have turned on the garbage disposal to get my attention...   "Whatcha starin at?"
