New toy
« on: January 20, 2014, 08:45:07 pm »
Just picked this up today.  Craigslist add. Hardly been used. Had a panel blade on it.  Was used for kids craft projects.  Needs a battery for the electronic read out but never needed it on the other one I used to use all the time (many years ago).  Should help making bee stuff a lil easier.

Shop is far too clean and organized.
How many others were looking at the pics intently, looking at what other goodies might be in that shop?  :)

Shop is really small so without the "somewhat" cleaned and organized there would be no room to work    I usually do as you said Perry.  See what else is lying around in plain site  ;D   Now I have to decide if the lil table saw will stay or will it go????

I just bought a RAS almost exactly like that on mine is on the stand, not the cabinet. I paid $100 for mine of Craigslist. Already made a ton of sawdust with it.

I can copy the manual for adjusting the saw if you don't have yours. Mine was so out of whack when I got it, I spent nearly 3 hours adjusting everything, still not 100% but good enough for making bee boxes and I won't be tearing up the blade, the saw, or myself in the process.

Great find and great tool!!  I have always wanted a RAS but just never got around to purchasing one. My dad had an old one that had like a 5 hp motor on it with a 14" blade. I used it when I was growing up. I believe he still has it but it has not been run in 20 years or so. I might just have to get it and see if I can get her running.

Spent about 3 hours last night following all the adjustment in the manual.  Don't think the PO ever checked any of it.  They only used to to cut 1/8" & 1/4" panel (kiddie projects).  I agree that it's adjusted well enough now for bee box's.  Got for $250  (+ $4.99 for a new battery).  No complaints here.

I'm curious though. Why not just get a sliding compound miter saw?

I like having a good sized work table.  I can also rip boards down to size on this.

I use my RAS to rip lumber.  can't do that with the sliding compound miter saw.
You do have to be careful, but you should be doing that with any saw.

A sliding Miter saw cant possibly compare to the huge versatility of the radial arm saw.
However...   I purchased a sliding Miter saw, and I am perfectly happy with the choice..   I mounted it in a table so I can screw in stops and cut many boards the same length. It works splendidly..   But thats about all it will do.   It will cut angles, probably make most trim I may need.  If I could buy a new RAS that had some quality to it for a reasonable price I would have.  Problem is there is no such thing as quality anymore..   unless you want to pay 3000 to 15000 dollars for the industrial quality saws I looked up..
