Title: My helper this week
Post by: Chip Euliss on July 13, 2016, 08:13:05 pm
My Granddaughter, Grace, is staying with us old folks this week and she's been helping get our 2nd round of supers ready for next week.  So far, we've put together over 1,000 7 5/8 supers (I add 2 foundations per 9-frame box per year).  Had a chance to let her taste a little "fresh" honey and get a personal view of the bees drawing comb, putting away nectar and capping honey.  I don't think I was that excited when I started keeping bees many years ago--may have a helper for a long time.  Nice to spend some family time, even if we had to work  :)  It rained 3 inches and next week it will be in the mid-80's so we'll put out all of the supers before we head south to fish.

That is precious and maybe even priceless!  It's fun sharing this with young people, especially when they are family. I'm happy for you!  Ted

Thanks folks--it's been a fun week.  I think it has rained over 2.5 inches since Grace got here--she's good luck to boot because we usually start drying out now 8)

That is a beautiful little girl.  You are a fortunate man.  God Bless both of you for being there for each other.

I can't think of a better time to make my first post than to say AWESOME!!!  Grand kids are so much fun!!  I don't think that I will ever have a grand daughter to share bee keeping with me.  I have 4 grandsons and bought a small bee keeping jacket with hood so the oldest (7 years old) can go through the hives with his dad and me.  Some where we have photos of him holding brood frames while doing his first hive inspection.

It is good to be able to get the grand kids and even out kids interest in bees, and they can pick up real quick about the bees also, great picture there.
Welcome Some Day to the forum, glad you are with us.

Welcome to the forum Some Day. :welcome:

Eli Wallach, one of my favourite all time classic actors, there was no one better suited for that role in "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."

I can't wait to share this beekeeping thing to my 2 grandchildren! Unfortunately the are way too young as of now and they live in another province :(

My wife and I have sons and grandsons.  We don't have a girl in the family.  I hate to think how much cash Gracie would cost me with my wife shopping for her clothes and such.  It would be happy money for me.

I have a couple of women friends that put on my wife's bee suit and look at the bees with me on occasion.  It appears that women have a slower, more delicate touch with bees.  I believe that most women can be very good handlers of bees.  As Gracie grows a bit, she will be an asset.  Of course, then the beekeeping time may be shared with cheer leading, sports, band, boys and parties and yada, yada, yada.

Welcome Some Day and thanks to all for the comments.  Grace seems to like all things outdoors.  She fished with us for a week 2 years ago and we'd leave the marina about 7 in the morning and get back mid-afternoon to have time to clean fish, etc.  After a couple of days, she asked if we could leave earlier so we'd be out there longer!  We had an alligator my son would get to come close enough to see; Grace wanted to catch it and have it for supper!
