Brick Wall and Steps House Corner Trap Out
« on: December 08, 2013, 10:10:21 am »
This was one of my most successful trapouts to date this summer 2013.  With a base knowledge I had been using from Iddee about trap outs and some technical drawings from G3 I was able to pull a very strong and viable colony from this wall.  G3 actually drafted a computer aided plan for me to tackle this corner (the 3 computer generated photos belong to G3)...Thanks G!  :D   I used steel wool for the joints versus wood.  I found steel wool a perfect filler for all of my trap out cracks that needed filling.  It was easy to appy and the bees can't eat through it.

More the story....The bees drew the Rite-cell (plastic and wax covered) foundation out very well.  In fact, two complete deeps!  I was impressed for my first time using plastic foundation.  Found the money shot with the queen cell.  The queen cell was drawn from a frame of eggs I placed in there from one of my stronger hives in the yard.

The following video is showing suggestions from G3 to add a little bridge from the cone to the entrance.  It helped the bees that much more finding the entrance.

I started the trap out May 10, 2013 and removed it July 7, 2013.  It had two full deeps when I removed it.  I was schooled on this trap out why Iddee always found it strange that guys, including myself  :( , used one single nuc for a trap out.

The hive to the left is the trap out. It was ready for a super as soon as it landed in my yard.

Nice work!!!
Follow up?  Did you seal up the entrance to the bricks? They made their queen/she mated and is now laying?

Oh yeah, the farmer that owned the house said he would fill in the joints with cement.  Yes, the queen went right to work.  I was able to pull a couple medium frames from it before fall set in.  They had enough honey to winter over so, hoping they make it through.
