Title: Frozen syrup

Have a friend who left his feed on over the last cold spell... will it be OK if thawed out and used again?

I would think so if it dosen't seperate when thawed. Kinda like freezing a soft drink, the water forms ice crystals and the syrup seperates. May make sugar candy with a water covering. Not something that happens often here.

The freezing point of sugar water is lower than just plain water (32 defrees F.).  How cold did it get?

I have this happen with hummingbird feeders. In our area a few hummers will not migrate, they are either older or not able to make the migration. My sugar water is in glass feeders. I bring them in and let them thaw over night. But what happens is that the condensation created by the melting syrup on the inside dilutes the syrup. So I let them melt a couple of night then make up new syrup.

Might have to heat it up a little to boil off the condensate that has diluted the syrup, this would also break down any of the crystallization that might have occurred.
