paraplegic queen
« on: June 03, 2022, 05:39:58 pm »
I was in the hives today and saw my queen in one - she looked a bit odd to be, but I couldn't put my finger on it, then it hit me - she was missing her back two legs.   I still see eggs, larva and capped brood, so she is still laying - my question is will the bees move to supersede her sooner as she is "defective"?
I wish I would have thought to get a photo...  perhaps next week.

I had a queen missing one leg, she was a laying machine that lived into her 3rd year. One of the best layers that I ever had. Have to admit I was surprised that the bees didn't supersede her.

I wondered how old she is, was it the result of queens fighting for dominance?

Very well could be. My queen with a missing leg had a good limp and kinda dragged her abdomen but that didn't stop her for a minute.
