I have shut down my Queen Rearing for the year.
« on: July 27, 2015, 09:07:00 pm »
I have stopped grafting larva to rear queens for 2015.
By the time the queens I have now get mated it will be way up in August before they're mated.
Next spring I will start out with around 100 boxes with 4 mating nucs to the box.
I'm managing my hives for next spring now.
I'm going to treat with Oxalic Acid next week since the capped brood count is down.
Then in 10 days I'll treat again.
I'll store my filled out wax foundations and treat them with BT

Hi capt44,I have a question about queen cells.I bought some queen cells from a friend and they are in hair roller protector cages.I placed them in nucs last night. The question is should I open the bottom of the hair roller or wait  un-till  they hatch?
I don't know.It was like that when I got here.

Open them but leave the colony queen less for a couple of hrs before putting the cells in.
If the queen is aloud to release on her own then you are not having to disturb them to release the queen.

When I install a queen cell on a frame I usually put a queen cell protector cage over the cell.
That way the virgin queen can be released from the end but the queen can't tear the side out of the cell.

Thx capt. I checked and had 6 of 8 hatch well, and I spotted 4 or 5 of them. Now all they have to do is start laying and not get eaten by yellow jackets.
