Title: Newbee
Post by: Beepasbees on February 08, 2018, 11:17:28 am
Hello,

Thank you for letting me join the fun. I am new to the world of beekeeping and will be starting up in the spring with 2 packages. I have my boxes ready to go. Hope to learn from all of you. I live up in the North East Area so any tidbits are much welcome as knowledge and experience are an abundance of wealth. I am attending classes for new beeks, joined the local bee club, and read many books on this newfound hobby.

Walt

Welcome Walt. Have fun with your new hobby, ask lots of questions and take your camera and if you have questions post a picture and you will most likely receive a fast advice. or some one can explain what is happening in the photo.

I started off by ordering one package, and ordered supplies.

Then I learned that two are better than one, so you can steal from one in case something goes wrong with the other.  So, I changed my order to two packages and ordered more supplies.

Then I was told that nucs stand a better chance of surviving the first year than packages.  So, I changed my order to two nucs.

I'm starting my third year and still feel like a newbee.  Better start saving your money now because you will find all kinds of beek-related tools and books that you just have to have.

Welcome to the forum and the wonderful world of beekeeping.

Ditto and welcome!
This will (hopefully) be my second year keeping bee's. Last year my hive was robbed at the end of the season and they died.
Folks here are very friendly and helpful, welcome to the group!

Welcome Walt!
I think you are off to a good start.  Bee club, beginners class, and books are a great way to start.  Good luck in your bee keeping journey!

Welcome Walt, I am starting my fourth year.  This is the first Spring that I still have the same number of hives I started the Winter with.  Glad to see you started with two packages, if you can expand with a Nucleus colony or two, even better. My words of advice are find an experienced mentor and don’t let anyone tell you that you can get away without treating for mites.  Dealing with mites will make or break your beekeeping experience.  Take a look at Youtube and search the “National Honeybee Show 2017”.  Even though it is held in England, several of the speakers are from the USA and you will gather a wealth of info.
Best of luck and have fun!
