Look what followed me home
« on: December 20, 2014, 08:52:46 pm »
Sold my older smaller splitter today.  Then traded my 6100 dolmar chainsaw for the biggest saw dolmar makes the 7910 this thing will run a 36 inch bar.  I put a 24 inch bar on the saw and it will drop through a hedge log full length of bar like its butter.  Got a good friend that has the dolmar dealership so I got a sweet deal.  Now if I can just get perry down here to run it and In return I will give him all the hedge  he can mail home. ;D

Nice looking saw. What's it weigh?
That reminds me, I should show my wife how to run my new Stihl before I forget.

Its been wet around here and cant get in to tryout the new saw.  Like a kid at Christmas I loaded up after the rain stopped packed the saw, gas, oil and spare chains a 1/4 mile across a muddy cornfield and let the sawdust fly.  That saw is a tree cutting machine.  24 inch bar will bury into a 26 inch diameter log of hedge like it was balsa wood.  Ran 2 tanks through it.  Wife says you left the wood you cut out there someones going to take it.  If they can load a 26 inch diameter 18 inch log of hedge into the truck even using 2 guys. They can have it I'm not messing with them.

Hey rat, what kind of chain do you have to use on hedge? I have several hedge trees i'm going to cut for fence post, i spend about as much time sharpening the chain as i do cutting the post. Jack

I run Carlton chains they are owned by Oregon and about best I have found.   I run 2 types of chains the first is full chisel skip tooth on the bigger logs.  I recently tried the semi chisel chain it actually cuts better and stays sharp longer than the full chisel.  what size chain do you run I might be able to fix you up with a chain.  I make my own off rolls of bulk chain.

Safety change has an anti-kick back safety link by the depth rakers that helps to keep the chain from kicking back.  The first photo is safety chain

And this is a chain without kickback bumpers

I order my chain from the carlton wholesaler in my area.  Search carlton wholesaler to find one.  Unless you cut a lot of wood makig your own chains wont save you a whole lot.

Hey rat, my chain saw is a Husqvarna 51 with a 16 in. bar. A local small engine shop has bulk chains he makes up when you take your saw to him. He claims the chain he has is a harder steel than the Organ chains? They are a good chain, but i don't know what brand they are? Jack

Unless your grinding your chains down cutting in the gravel the bar should be replaced with every 2nd chain. The slot wares and the chain gets sloppy and wanders if the slot is to warn.

Hedge is about the equivalent of cutting gravel.  Its hard as a rock and you go through chains I run  a chain until it starts getting dull and change it out.  Its not uncommon to go through 3 chains for ever cord you cut. And I go through a lot of bars 2 or 3 a year cutting about 30 to 40 cord of hedge

Hey fellows, How about coming around my way and having a log cutting competition.  I have a large almond tree that fell down in a storm last winter and I haven't finished cutting it down to chunks small enough to remove it all.  With great hesitation a bought an electric chain saw and did most of the cutting, but the bottom two meters or so of the trunk is still around.
The pieces I have managed to cut down to size are burning in the heating stove of my daughter's home, but I want to give her the rest of it so her family will stay warm.  :t3825:
