A G3....what happened here #1
« on: December 17, 2013, 07:27:11 pm »
Went out to the hives looking for signs of life, I found it, but not what I wanted.

Can you new bees tell what happened here?

I'll bet when you clean it up you will find hundreds and hundreds of little grooves in the wood.

It is wax moths, mama. They move in when a hive gets weak or dies. They totally destroy the wax and cut grooves into the wood to pupate. They will also infest supers of drawn comb in storage. You can spray the wax with BT, ""Bacillus thuringiensis"" and it will kill the wax moth larva as soon as they hatch. It will protect the comb for years.

so is an application of bt some thing you only do at the sing of infestation or can the be applied as a prevenative? It looks like they can do major damage once given the chance.

You can spray new foundation before they ever draw it into comb. You can spray empty comb. You can pull combs full of bees out and spray bees and all. It won't hurt the bees. Then the comb is protected for years to come. If you forget which ones you sprayed, you can respray them without damage.

Agree WG - Bt Aizawai Powder
is what you want. The one you gave looks to be mixed with pesticide.
There are many different BT's.

Go ahead and post, zulu. Sundance has not held his end up very well. He is just the only source I could be sure of.

I use 1 teaspoon per quart. Mix it a quart at a time and spray about 30 frames.
