Damascus Knife!
« on: February 17, 2023, 09:19:40 am »

My latest Knife, added to the collection for the spring sale.. I have TWO people supposedly making sheath's for me, but, after a couple calls to bug them, and being assured they are working on it...... I ordered a kit and accessories to figure out how to make my own. One more thing that will take up TIME I am running out of WAY to fast!

Does anyone make leather sheaths for knives? Attempting my first one. I have hired two different people to MAKE sheaths for the knives I make, and they have both dropped the ball, so, I am working on it myself. Watching videos etc...   just looking for advice and tips if anyone has experience!

I do some leather as I need it. I’ll help if I can. What do you need to know?

I still use this holster 10 years later.
I make a new sling every time I get a new rifle.

I’ve done a few knife sheaths. Let me see if I can find one…

Here’s a hard used one. I probably have some more out in the building.

I have a forge as I used to show horses. Never made a knife, but it would be neat to have one. I used to have to weld certain types of shoes with borax if they needed a bar or heart bar shoe.

Looks nice. I like Damascus. Can you do that with SS or just CS?

Sorry to totally butt in here, but what kind of horses did you show, Micah?

Yeah, my apologies, that was supposed to say shoe. I was a farrier for a five years when I was a young man. Went to Oklahoma State Horseshoeing School in Ardmore, OK. Here is the funny part. I got tired of dealing with horse people, so I became a Sheriff’s Deputy for 12 years. I got tired of people, so I became a public servant. You see the logic there? Funny, the things you do when you are young.

I had horses, broke horses and worked on a Saddlebred farm when I was a teenager working horses, so I can ride sissy too.

I’ve forgotten more about horses than most people will ever know.

Never showed them though.

Now you have me on a tangent that has nothing to do with Damascus. I had the most gentle horses. Neck reign like crazy. I regularly crawled underneath them to get through the narrow alley way of the barn. They could get tangled up in old downed barbed wire fences in the woods and they would stop on command after the initial startling, but then dismount and cut the wire carefully while squatting underneath them with pliers and never need a stitch. Ride down the road and get passed by a screaming fire truck. Wendy’s drive through. Standing in traffic in the median, waiting my turn to cross a 4 lane highway, and going over highway overpasses. Ride them into the trailer and dismount inside.

Now I’m not so sure all that was smart. But if Hank was still alive, I would do it all again.

Sorry lazy.

Shoe, show, same-same.  There were horses involved, so I got what I came here for.

It's all my fault, Lazy!  My curiosity quotient is now filled.  Back to knives!

I can see my leatherwork may not be up to par for a knife like that, but I build things out of necessity, when I can’t find what I want. It’s a little crude at times, sometimes I get it right. I’ll be glad to help if I can though.

No worries at all.
My wife had to have her neck fused between C3 and C4 vertebrae, she was told to stay away from the horses. SHE DID stop riding her high spirited andalusian, but refused to stay off my Quarterhorse.  We got her and her mom when she was two weeks old. I always let her out so she could follow me around, she was like a giant dog. Rubbing her head against me for attention or snacks. I had her driving when she was one, and was the first person on her back when she turned two. I could do anything with her. Get her to lay down, and then lay on her. We rode a lot of trails with our group, there were a few that rode mules.
We were riding the river trail, one of the mule guys yelled... Ibet you horse people wish your horses would do this!  He slid down the bank into the river, another mule guy followed... my wife yelled at me.. DONT YOU DARE!   yep I did. He told me he hated my horse... It should have been a mule...   A long story short... my wife would come back from maine, saddle her up and head into town. She hadn't been ridden in close to a year, but she NEVER startled or threw a tantrum, but in the end, she was a horse, and it scared the hades out of me something would happen, and I would lose my wife, so i had to sell her.

I miss her a lot...   ANYHOW, I have now made four sheaths. The first came out horribly, the second was.. acceptable if barely so...  but I learned with each. Have made two that are pretty decent, and need to make more. Learned to dull the needles, the hard way. But, ANY tips or advice is always VERY welcome!

I usually mark my stitch lines and pre drill holes for the needle with a really small drill bit. I also use a curved 4-5” needle so I can push through several inches then get a firm grip to pull it out the other side. It’s the same needles I use for taxidermy when sewing up a deer hide on a mount.

This was my Mother's Day gifts from my husband.  Just what I wanted.  The Buck knife stays in my truck and the Smith & Wesson goes in my bee tool box.
No, not Damascus Knives, but I'm happy.

A good knife is a good knife!

Thats one of the fair sheaths I made. Need to make one for the knife I posted about still, but, other projects are keeping me going flat out. Funny how every year I swear and cuss and throw a fit about NOT doing as much NEXT year so I can get some of MY projects done... and yet again, I am going flat out doing stuff for wife and kids....  I am ready to sell the place, and move to Texas, live in the camp and fish every day.
