presentation
« on: May 26, 2022, 12:35:15 am »
I've been asked to give a 15-20 min presentation to non-beekeepers on products of the hive.

I figured I would throw out my ideas here, and then crowd source information and suggestions to make life easier.

So for products, I am thinking in no particular order, pollination, bees themselves (packages / nucs), pollen, honey, wax, royal Jelly, apitherapy, and propolis.

I'll add more tomorrow after I get up, as it is late here, and I need sleep.

that shouldnt be so bad...  You could easily just do half an hour on collecting pollen from the bees using pollen gates/entrances...  Handmade Soap, Lotion, Body Butter, Body Balm, Lip Balm, Soothing Salve and 100% pure Bees Wax Candles, NOT to mention HONEY and all of its uses and applications.   You got this!

I could easily go two hours. My problem is keeping out of the weeds, and giving a general overview.  I think what’s getting me is this is for on new people, so a lot of what I find interesting they may not.

Are you thinking value added products or topics related to beekeeping?  To me, value added products are soap, lotions, lip balm, etc.  To me, topics related to beekeeping would be nectar and pollen sources, pollination services, swarm education, observation hives, mead making, planting for pollinators, etc.
Is your audience beekeepers, wanna be beekeepers, or the public?
Will you be doing a powerpoint, hands on demo, or just talking?

For public, PowerPoint probably- it is for a “demonstration” time for our local county fair.

I would lean towards B12's value added products after a synopsis of the obvious honey, pollination and pollen gathering. you want to leave them with "Wow, I didn't know that" .

You only have 15-20 minutes so you need to do some planning and think this out. You can easily make lip balm in that time if all your ingredients are premeasured.  While you are waiting for the wax and other ingredients to melt that would leave you time to talk about another aspect of honey bees.  Perhaps planting for honey bees, the lethal effects of pesticides (Sevin Dust), or promote your bee club.  I would have handouts available with the lip balm recipe, your contact info for honey sales, info about your bee club, top 10 garden plants to feed the bees, good websites for more info about honey bees.
Lip balm sets up really quickly so you could hand out free samples.  Maybe have some free samples ready to handout with your contact info for those that want to buy honey from you.
Is this a one time presentation or will you be repeating it through the day?

When I do presentations at schools, I start by assembling a bee hive and explain what each piece is for.  Then I demonstrate and explain basic tools. That can get a lot of people thinking and asking questions.  Just a thought.

We already have a presentation on the hive components. Thanks though.   I’m going to record me riffing and going over my sparse notes, then transcribe and go from there.
