My new toy - JD 420C & #90 Loader
« on: June 02, 2014, 09:46:30 pm »
Hauled my new toy home on Saturday morning ;D ... but no bees yet

Anyway, ended up doing a wee bit of logging this evening.  The road crews are preparing to rebuild Hwy 62 in front of my house and are having to take out a few trees.   Three on my neighbour's lot.  He wanted the logs for lumber so after the forrestry crew had them on the ground, I skidded them around behind my neighbour's house with my 1957 John Deere 420 Crawler..

Beautiful toy. I don't think my little 8n would be up to that job.  ;D

Are you going to use as is, or restore it?

I will be restoring it at some point but can use it as is to get some landscaping done.  I bought a JD 40C (model before the 420C) and #61 dozer 14 years ago to restore but had so much fun playing with it that I only tore it down for restoration about two years ago.

I have not seen a yellow one. Only the standard JD Green with the yellow stripe. Is there a story that goes with it?

Very nice toy!  And, also, is that a Streamline camper on the right?  Yours?  I will have one of those someday if there are any left in good shape.

In the mid/late 1950s, JD was starting to shoot for the industrial market.  This tractor is one of the first in that initiative - they instigated a no extra cost construction yellow option.  I have debated painting it the agricultureal green and yellow when I restore but then that part would not be original.  As you can sort of see in the pics, most of the decals are still readable and, perhaps most significantly, the grill screen is still largely intact even without a grill guard.  It appears that the crawler was taken reasonably good care of.  It is missing the seat, which is always the case, and the air cleaner assembly, which is a bit odd, but otherwise most of it is there.

No history.

Nice looking toy! I would back track the owners if possible and you just might come up with the air cleaner.

Thanks.  I think the guy I bought it from, who had it about 10 years, has, or had the air cleaner.  He thought it was around the barn somewhere, like the oil filler cap, but he couldn't find it.  Said he would keep an eye peeled and let me know if anything turned up.  Not much hope though as there was a lot of stuff in that barn and if he didn't find it while looking, hopes are slim for the future.  These parts are easy enough to find although the amount of cash it takes sometimes is a different story. I figure to spend close to the purchase price in the restoration.

Check with Welters in Missouri. They may have the parts you need and they are reasonable.
