If my hive has more than plenty stored pollen, do I need to put a winter patty on?
-
Do you want to raise more brood?
-
In my part of the country, that would be a small hive beetle breeder. Even in winter. SHB like to snuggle in with the bees and over winter.

Rast, I'm talking about Winter patties which are lower in protein and won't promote more brood, then in spring you put on Spring patties which amps up the queen. Winter patties are simply more carbs for the bees to eat during winter to help them stay warm.
Bakers, fortunately no small hive beetle here.

"Winter patties are simply more carbs for the bees to eat during winter to help them stay warm.""
If they only contain carbs, what does the amount of pollen have to do with it?
-
The only ingrediant in "winter" patties that adult bees need is the sugar and there are less exspensive ways to give them that. I think they put attractants in it to get them to eat (move) it. Please don't take my word for it cause I may be very wrong, go study what bees actually do with pollen.
