Find the Queen
« on: December 27, 2013, 12:46:28 pm »
I find it good practice finding the queen in pics. Mine are fairly dark queens and these were not marked. I left them large enough you may have to scroll

Practice is good and your pictures are great, thanks.

Only bad thing about pictures is you can't observe the worker's behavior which also helps in locating a queen.

Nice pictures!

Was #9 of a virgin queen?  She looks a bit thinner than the rest.  :)

I dont think that is likely, but I do know Tibor had to go through one nuc the second time to find the queen. Those are new waxed frames that the bees moved into from the four frames that were from the nuc. All brood on the new frames should have been hers.

Lburou,

Virgin queens are usually shorter than mature queens.   Here is a picture of a virgin queen,  notice her abdomen size compared to the workers.

Wow, that would be hard to find indeed. Has the bare thorax but still fuzzy abdomen not long and smooth.

Good Pics!!  I couldnt find the queen in 7, found the rest..
I used to have a LOT of trouble finding queens..  then I ended up helping a club member find queens he had sold..  after half a dozen they started to get easier. Best practice you can get. Finding queen after queen...   Like Robo said.. sometimes you dont even see her right away, but notice the workers moving differently around her or getting out of her way etc...  Cant ever have enough find the queen pics!!

My guess on 10 is about three inches to the right of your thumb, about an inch up from the bottom board with a bee covering her abdomen.. If thats not her then I cant find her in the pic...    havent found her in 7 either, still looking!!!

I never could spot the one on #10

Looks to me like the one on #7 is laying an egg which makes it even harder to find because you can not see her long abdomen but can see her shiny thorax, on the left in the middle.

Click on the thumbnail to enlarge the pic, then click on the pic once more to enlarge again. This makes the bees about 2" long.

NICE!!   That helps.. except the one I was looking at before looks like a drone now...       need a coffee to go over them now that I can see them up close and personal!

On #7 how about 2 bee widths up from the bottom near the centre   about 3 bee lengths to the left of the bee with wings abuzz.

There is a bee covering the queens head and thorax and another half on top of her. her tail is in a cell. A bit out of focus and shaded.

I cant find# 10 either!
