Hello from Texas
« on: July 09, 2016, 04:13:07 pm »
Hey,

I'm just getting started after not being around bees since I was a kid. My dad had two hives while I was growing up, but that was long ago. My plan is to run 8 frame boxes, all mediums, as I had back surgery last year. I'm just outside of San Antonio, and am looking forward to having bees again.

Welcome to the forum.  For those of you not familiar with Boerne.  It is in the heart of the beautiful Texas Hill Country.  Historically, it was a stage coach stop.  It should be good bee country as there are a lot of wild flowers.  It is also quite an urban area at this time.  As they say on TV, "come on down Dow."

Welcome Dow.  8 frame mediums is a smart way to go when weight is an issue.

Dow:

I am 77 years old, and I too, am going to eight frame medium hive boxes.  I still have a few 10 frame boxes, and I am ridding myself of them.  A 10 frame deep honey super is a load on my old body, in fact, I lifted an eight frame deep full of honey last week, and it was a LOAD.  You're doing the right thing.

Kind of what I thought, Lazy.  I've got most of my strength back, but every time I feel the least little twitch, I wonder if it's just me or if it's the surgery.  My brother-in-law had neck surgery in 2000, and he's the same way.  Funny, huh?

Hey dow, welcome to the forum!  I've got a sweet spot in my heart for Texas.  Some of the nicest guys and prettiest girls in the world live there.  I live in Iowa and love it, but sometimes my heart burns for Texas.  Ted

Thanks Ted.  I was in Iowa once for a job interview.  Some pretty blonde girls up that way.  But man was it cold.  3 below zero and windchill of -38 the day of my interview.  It had been 80 when I got on the plane in Dallas.  Needless to say, they didn't have enough money (or blondes) to make me take the job, lol!

Thanks again for the welcome. :)

Welcome!

Boerne has the Guadalupe River running nearby...A great river to float.  My sons and I have run that river many, many times.  River banks have some of the last remaining untouched land in America, as beautiful as it must have been 1,000 years ago.   Fond memories on the Guadalupe for sure.  :)
