A good friend ran over a wild turkey's nest with his haybine (killed the hen turkey) :o. He took the eggs and put them under a setting hen.(chicken) three hatched out and he said it was fun watching  the hen chase after and try to protect them when they would run out in the fields chasing grasshoppers. :D Jack

They often get let out of the chicken fort during the day to run about as they will, then they get closed in at night for protection.

We had geese nested up all along the crick below our house..  My wife decided it would be FUN to snag an egg from each nest and hatch them...
Like an idiot, I agreed, and put them in my incubator..   we had 8 goslings running ALL about...  Then the fox got one, and the wife was up in arms...   So I got the fox... then there were 7...  Then there were 6, then there were 5..  no idea where they went, I suspected feral cats, so the live traps went out..  cats skunks and coons were captured and... umm, relocated....
We ended up with 4 adult geeses, and goose poo all over EVERYTHING!! !! !!   Thankfully, they flew away that fall..  But one pair returns to our pond each year. it is usually easy to tell its them, because they honk at the door to get bread....   worse than a teenage boy after your daughter...   ok, maybe not that bad....

:D Good story Scott! I used to babysit a couple of kids at their house after school. Their mother thought it would be delightful to bring home goslings for the boys to watch and learn. I've never seen so much poo in my life!

geese are no fun my mom had a co mingled coop when i was younger and they would send me in for eggs  and the drake of the geese would peck me every darn time. would end up with welps to a bruise.  I still cringe when my uncle stars to talk about smedrick. He named him that an i have no clue why?

My Uncle had a goose that attacked, dang thing left a jagged little cut on my side.. I was a kid, about 11 or 12, no shirt when it nailed me..   There was an old corn crib falling apart about ten steps away. Goose chased me to it.. No, I didnt climb up, i grabbed a loose slat, and spun around swinging for all I was worth..   BAP! No more goose!  Boy was my uncle mad..  I didnt really care.. I was mad at him for not telling me. I walked the 7 miles home.
Had a rooster that attacked my wife once.. I told her the story about the goose.  She resisted till he finally got her with his spurs on the back of her calf...    BAP!
I was so proud of her!

We had a beautiful white goose that took a liking to our neighbor's daughter---with it's neck gracefully extended it would chase after her.  She would run for all she was worth but still got her share of nips on her behind.
Eventually, we gave it away to a school's "farmyard zoo".  To see how things were going, we visited it after a week.
What a disappointment.  We had raised it from the age of about one week---and it showed absolutely no signs of recognition.

That's strange, ef. We had a duck that took up with our cocker spaniel. When the dog died and we buried it, the duck sat on the dirt mound and starved. Wouldn't eat or drink. Died laying on the dog's grave.

Maybe our goose felt betrayed by us and wanted to have nothing to do with us any more?

Back in BC there was a huge factory that built RV trailers, campers and such. The entire plant was surrounded by double run chain-link fence with about 10 feet in between the two fences. This space was inhabited by a large (or several) flocks of geese. I defy anyone to ever try and sneak up to the plant thinking you could hop in and steal anything, it wasn't gonna happen!

EF  I think ducks imprint when they are younger. Had some i rasied form chicks that would come sit with you for morning coffee and their belly rubs. Kids could hold them an all.  These ones we were given in the summer this past year are kinda skiddish. Hubby wants me to find him spring ducklings so he has pets.  Suppose I created a monster when I brought those babies home from auction that first time. Nothing more funny then a half drunk fella with three ducklings sleeping on him.
