Mikey, how many bees are in that hive? like give an example... like the size of an orange, or maybe 5 or 10 bees?

Jen , it was my fault. Back in mid Oct. bee's were sucking down 2:1 sugar water. I found that I had a problem with a Aug. swarm, so I put all effort in that hive to get it nuced down, when weather allowed, and should have looked in other hives during that time. Lesson learned, did sugar roll on that hive in late Aug. 2 mites. I assumed hive was healthy as bee's were bringing in pollen and sucking up sugar water, just like other hives. Lesson never assume. I had a weather window to install shims and cakes 2 weeks ago, that's when I seen , there was a problem. Nuc-ed it down to bottom 10 deep to 6 frames with foam and follower board and couldn't find marked Q, and didn't see new Q.

Ooh I think I see now. The pic with the queen... is a dead queen. I thought she was rambling around in that hive with just a few bees.

Mikey, I have had times when I couldn't get to the hives in a timely manner. One year my husband had several surgeries and I had a hard enough time just watering the yard let alone tending to hives. Another winter I had one of my nucs starve and freeze because I forgot to insulate the lid, so as the bees ate their honey upward they got too close to the freezing lid.

Happens to all of us. And by the way Mikey, I think you are a very good beekeeper! You ask a lot of questions and it's obvious that you care about your bees  :)

This late season Queen probably wasn't bred well.
