Title: 2014 Blackberries
Post by: brooksbeefarm on May 12, 2014, 08:38:31 pm
Looks like last winters hard freeze got my thronless black berry patch. The hard freeze killed the canes, but new canes are coming on for next year. The wild black berries and raspberries around my northern outyards are ready to bloom, but right now something up there is getting there attention, i thought a swarm was in process when i pulled two days ago two check the 14 hives in this one yard, the sky was full of bees :o. Of course all plants and trees bloom and the ticks had a good hatch it seems, so i didn't walk around to see what it was?? Jack

Bummer about the blackberries.  My everbearing raspberries are about the size of bb's and there are tons.  I now some folks that mow or chop down the raspberries every fall.  Would ya do that with blackberries too?

Blue, i don't know of any, the ones i have (Triple Crown) will put on canes this year for next year, after they bare you cut those canes out and pick 3 to 4 new canes that sprout from there root and cut any others off. There are raspberries that you cut everything off at the end of the year and they will sprout and bare the next year. I can't recall the name of them. Jen you should see my grand kids faces when the blackberries are ripe.  :D Jack

My thornless blackberry vines stalks or whatever you call them are doing ok.  The wild blackberries are blooming like crazy everywhere around here.  It's going to be a great year for blackberries.  Unfortunately, it's also a great year for ticks.

Stand in the trough Jack! Then you only need to watch out for heads instead of whole bodies!! Leave a spot in the middle clear to stand in.. they figure out theres nothing in that spot and move to the side, thus clearing your escape route.   ;D

When I was a kid...  back before computers and cell phones.. we used to have a lot of family get togethers. All us kids would be out in the pasture..   The cows learned that when my aunt rang the dinner bell that they had been grained, so they would make a run for the feed trough..   For them, and for us, it was first come first serve..   So the first thing you did was run HARD and catch the closest cow by the tail...  The three hundred yard run to the house then became a matter of NOT stepping in a cow pie and going down as your feet touched the ground about once every ten feet...  If you did it right, you beat the other kids to the house. If you hit a cow pie.. you got stripped down and washed off with the HOSE RIGHT on the porch...  Well water is COLD so its really embarassing....

Been there done that ;D. How come they stripped us boys down for all to see and hosed us down, but if the girls got manure on them they took them in the house to clean up. ??? No Fair. ;D Jack
