I see that Kelley Beekeeping has it's 2 frame plastic extractor on sale for $50. I am not crazy about plastic and I wonder how durable it is. Might be a good start for someone just getting started in beekeeping. It's definitely better than the crush and strain method.

Like you said might not stand up for to long but it is better than destroying comb so the bees need to start from scratch, and a lot cheaper than a flow super.

I received a phone call last night from a second year beekeeper. He comes to bee club meetings, so I will answer his questions when he calls. He is trying to learn. He told me that he harvested some honey by the crush and strain method. When I told him about the Kelley sale, he said he owns an extractor but didn't think the job warranted getting it dirty. I didn't lecture, but I wanted to. :-X

................. :D getting it dirty!? lol !!! not sure he's going to learn if he doesn't want to get his extractor dirty and chooses to destroy frames as apis mentioned..........and the work the bees have to do to repair/build comb for next season ;D

Can anybody tell me how much honey is sacrificed to produce a frame of wax? I knew at one time. There have been several times lately I wished I could remember so I could drive home the point of how valuable the comb is.
I think that he destroyed half a super. It was still uncapped and he was worried about fermentation. He said he got a about a quart and a half of honey. He doesn't need to worry about fermentation. It will be gone before that happens. I really don't think that was worth bothering with. I would have left that for the bees.
I understand his situation. He shared this with me from the beginning. His father wanted the honey and purchased all the equipment. He wanted to do something for his dad and when his first year was a failure he really wanted something to show for his efforts.

2 lb wax to draw out 10 deep frames 8 to 10 lb of honey to make a pound of wax. Honey at $5.00 a pound.
2X8X5=$80.00 or $8.00 per frame
2X10X5=$100.00 or $10.00 per frame

Thank you, apis. That is exactly what I was looking for. A wise, old beekeeper in my local bee club explained that to the club. I had forgotten the numbers. His argument was that it was a better use of wax when applied to undrawn foundation that it is to make a candle and sell it.

Foundation for deep frame about 7 sheets per pound. wax foundation at $1.25 a sheet
9 Lbs of honey (average) to make a Lb of wax and honey selling at $5.00 a Lb.
9 X $5.00=$45.00 worth of honey to make 1lb of wax.
$45.00 / 7 = $6.50 worth of honey for each sheet of foundation.
That is my friends why I don't go foundation-less. I do understand that the bees build the center rib a lot thinner when they do it on their own but it is also a lot more fragile than bought wax foundation. Less drone cells are drawn also.

bakers, i get it. i understand now, thanks for filling us in. hard to say what i might say to him about his father's wishes, only he will struggle with that. when folks realize just what exactly goes into a bees life (knowledge/experience) and producing honey and what we do as keeps to extract it irregardless of the method used, maybe one can really truly appreciate honey bees? many new keeps want honey. we have all witnessed it or been 'guilty' of taking from the bees, not just in honey but wax as well. we learn.
comb is very, very valuable to me. i run 8 frames in a 10 frame super. i have learned not to take as much wax when i uncap my frames. it is better to leave the wax for the bees so they are not rebuilding as much next season. i still get the honey, maybe not as much wax, but the bees don't have to work so hard at building wax but rather filling the cells with lots of honey. i can purchase good wax for candles, etc, but i what i can't purchase is honey for my own hives if i don't have good drawn comb to do so. :)

Kelley Beekeeping has brought the $50 extractor again. I assume the price is good until the end of the year but not sure. I received an email from Kelley Bees that they are running the same extractor on sale for $50. That's 75% off. If you are going to harvest honey this year, this is better than the crush and strain method. A sharp serrated bread knife, a bucket or bin to catch the wax cappings, a fine mesh screen to strain, and a food grade bucket to hold your honey and you are set.
Saving your frames of comb is a lot more efficient for the bees than crushing it.

Don't do the crush and strain method if you don't have to. You and your bees will be so much farther ahead in the years to come. Comb is priceless!
