Holy Sunflowers
« on: July 22, 2015, 07:15:24 pm »
Ken is six foot tall and these babies are dwarfing him.  Some haven't even budded yet.  They are right next to the hives, so the bees will be delighted when they flower.  Then the birds can have at 'em!  Admins can you fix photo? Thank you.

Love it!  I hope you post another picture when they bloom.  Here at Squirrel Manor, the squirrels decapitate the sunflower heads at cart them away!

Les, have you heard of Mexican Sunflowers?  Those are a good alternative for me, since the Ninja Squirrels rule the yard.  Mexican Sunflowers come in two varieties.  Height is the only difference as both blooms are the same.  The seeds remind me of zinnias and are as easy to germinate as zinnias.  All pollinators love the blooms, including hummingbirds.  The squirrels leave them alone.

Baker, I just looked them up.  Beautiful, I think they will be added to my must haves for next year.   I love mixing orange with purple.  I am quite sure the squirrels will have at mine too.  They have already sampled the nectarines for ripeness, stinkers.  I am wrapping the tree in tuille today to try and thwart them.

Just shy of 12 feet now and some still don't have flowers. Those are my hives hiding back there.  Won't the bees have a treat when they finally flower.  Everyone in the neighborhood has planted sunflowers this year.  Good for the bees!!

Admins please fix photos, thank you!

They are finally opening.  Have to say for all that height they don't put out much of a flower.  The other odd thing is that they do not turn their faces to follow the sun like most sunflowers do.  All that matters is the bees love them.

Looks wonderful, it's like they are watching all sides guarding so no one can sneak up behind them with a knife so they wont end up as a table center piece.

Apis.....good one.  Fortunately (or unfortunately) one snapped off in a rain storm so I can't be blamed for taking a knife to it LOL.

Did you let Ken in the house? or did you make him stand by the sunflowers in the rain. :D Jack
