Gorgeous Doesn't get any better than that. Rainbow trout have to be one of the best lake \ river fish for eating out there.

River, so long as you don't develop an allergic reaction to Church or to fish, you'll be okay (even if you should happen to come a little late).
Enjoy your vacation.
Come home reinvigorated and happy.
Regards to the family  :)

thanks!  and thanks for all the well wishes!
we had some long time friends from michigan with us on the first week of our journey west. we hadn't seen them for 4 years. it was awesome to see them and their two incredible sons.  catching up, exploring, teaching one of the sons to fish with a fly rod, going fishing on the blackfoot, playing bocce ball, watching the deer, eagles and other birds. sitting on the porch of the place yammering watching sunsets and thunderstorms roll in and gazing at a bazillion stars at night.  lol, not to mention a couple good nerf gun 'fight's......... nerf gun balls and bullets all over creation ...... :D
we were still finding 'ammunition' when we all packed up to leave...... :D

a little 'history'........the big blackfoot river was made famous in robert redford's movie 'a river runs through it' (starring brad pitt).  the movie wasn't filmed on the blackfoot river, it was filmed on the gallatin river.  anyway, it put montana and fly fishing on the map for montana, and many travel here to fish the rivers.

denomination?............good one bakers!.............. :D

my 'church' is the outdoors, and probably will always be.  it is where i find my 'place', and my spiritual/solitude in life.

a great view:

above pic, the last swallow that fledged:

a fiery sunset (forest fire near us causing some great color):

some montana fishing guides seem to find the steepest, narrow, rocky, slippery places to take rafts out of the river, makes it really hard for those of us with new hardware in the hips to get up these godforsaken take outs........... :D
but hey, it's part of the 'church' thing............. :D :D :D

yep, that's the raft down below, doesn't look like much.......just wait.........

trailer backed up to the edge with a cable attached to pull the raft up.....

here she comes!.......little rough on the bottom.......... :D

and ready to be winched onto the trailer.........

............ :D

going drifting/fishing all day tomorrow...........be back soon!

yeah jack, me in a rubber raft with a fly rod.......dangerous.......... :D

i am not fond of smaller rafts, especially in deep water and/or whitewater, with big boulders/house rocks and deep waves, especially if i am sitting in the back.........  i was sitting in the back yesterday and almost fell out....... :D
i shouldn't have been sitting back there, and was quickly shifted to the front.  oh well. my legs aren't strong enough yet (ya don't have the room in the back as you do in the front to manuever) i decided to swing my legs around the back of the raft and oops, nearly went in the drink............ :P

a pic of our guide yesterday putting the raft in.......we put in just below gardiner, montana, yellowstone national park (yellowstone river). the water is whitewater, colder and deeper in some sections just below the park.  big house sized boulders beneath the surface. usually great fishing, not so much yesterday. temps here have been in the 90's. the river is down, not enough snow fall this winter, so the water was lower, and warmer than normal especially in the lower river below gardiner, through paradise valley and east of livingston. also, this area is known for headwinds that will slap your fly right back into your face or worse yet your guides face.........or ear............ :D
not saying how i know this........... :D

i seem to be taking a few of these pictures lately........

(camera pointed at my head)............ :D

we watched an osprey take a trout from the river and deliver it to hungry young ones in a nest nearby.  i didn't get pix or video of the osprey taking the trout, i was so mesmerized by the osprey flying so close to us, it was so incredible!  i did take a few pix of the nest, best one:

end of the day........we started out at 8:30 a.m. and took out about 6:30 p.m. it was a long day, but a good day.  a cold beer and a quick visit with old 'river runner' friends (rafting company).  highly recommend them if you get out this way........river source rafting company (they are awesome! website:

I am glad to hear you had a wonderful time.  I went through Gardiner  on the way into Yellowstone two summers ago.  That was the summer before knee replacement.  I think you had a lot more fun than me, but I enjoyed myself.  There are a lot of outfitters to choose from.  Also, I understand that area has kind of become a celebrity get away from it all.  The story told to me was that Steve McQueen loved the Livingston area.  He liked to go hunting and fishing there and in the area.

RiverBee:

The pictures are beautiful, and your accompanying words are well received.  How I do envy your trip.  I did not get to Montana this summer.  A series of illnesses with old friends make my long vacation into two short ones.

I share with you the love of fly fishing.  I did manage a few days of fishing in Vermejo, NM.  It's not like Montana, but it is trout in flowing water.

I'm glad you had a great time, and we are all happy to have you return to the forum family.

................. :D :D :D
that's funny!  and thanks! makes me feel like someone special or that i am missed when i gone.  i think we all think that way about one another?
i know i do.  if someone goes mia here, i am wanting to find out what's going on or touching base with a member; so i always try to post that i am gonna be gone so iddee, perry and apis don't send a posse out or come looking for me and starting threads wondering where i am!............ :D

i am back...........it's hard returning from places you love.......
not sure but i think land lindbergh's ranch/place is now for sale on the blackfoot river! wow!  (land lindbergh is charles lindbergh's (aviator) son. it's an awesome place!
(well, from the exterior......... :D) very remote. lots of acreage. what a a beautiful setting!

celebrities flock to this area, (western montana)  i see them, or rather who i recognize or think i recognize.......... :D on the airplanes, airports, local shopping ect...........ain't no limousines around.... :D  some own property, some own a few resorts, and some own places on the rivers. what's interesting really is talking to the guides if the celebrity is into fishing or just floating the rivers, skiing or hunting. many of these guides are 'all season guides'.  interesting hearing their stories.  the day we floated the blackfoot our guide floated luke bryan the day before, (country singer) and we bumped into him in a local grocery store in livingston asking our opinion about something in the deli/meat fish department....... i about fell over when i realized who he was........ :D :D :D dang maybe could have got tickets to his concert in minnesota telling him what to buy........ :D :D :D
just common folks..........
unless they have an entourage........... :D :D :D

after we left and returned home an unprecedented closure of 183 miles of the yellowstone river from livingston to laurel is closed to ANY recreational activity. very sad.  i have never seen this happen. while we were in livingston, i noted a few whitefish and trout coming down river, floating belly up. every time i spotted one, i kept asking the guide what was going on..........low water and temps stress fish but now a new threat to the fishery.
a parasite that attacks the kidneys.......
i know many guides, fly shop owners, many folks that rely on the income from those who come to enjoy the recreational activities the yellowstone river provides.  very sad.
we were thinking on planning a quick fishing trip back in the fall.......not going to happen.

story here if anyone is interested:

Fish kill closes 183 miles of Yellowstone River, tributaries to all recreation
