interesting observation
« on: February 02, 2014, 11:32:01 pm »
I have two hives that I finished with Cabot Cove spar varnish.  I have noticed over the last two winters that it is evident where the cluster is located in the hive if they are close to one of the sides.  It creates a discoloration.  The discoloration disappears in Spring when the temperatures warm up.  Has anybody else ever seen anything like this?

Well thats pretty neat.. no need for a thermal imaging camera on that hive!

That is interesting. I really like the look of the natural finish on hives like that.

That's cool.  Proof that condensation does occur with in the hive?  I like your hive stand.  It would be interesting to try a stain instead of paint here in Kansas.  I wonder how the temperature inside the hive would differ from the traditional white paint?  We have such weather extremes here.

Very Cool I bet it is humid moisture from the bees is drawn to the cold but because of the finish can not escape so gets trapped in the wood under the finish. It would be neat to know what the different in moisture content in the 2 different areas

Yeah, I have...Bees make heat.  The last 2 winters in wi. have been nasty.  Breath on a frost car window & watch it thaw.  That's what' you're looking at on the side of the hive/a wet spot on the snow/a thaw in the ice.
