And now for a word about ticks
« on: July 05, 2018, 03:37:47 am »
Bees may suffer from Varroa mites, but beekeepers are often exposed to ticks.  Ticks carry diseases and deserve our attention.
Here's an article with some basic information on the topic.

I hope he doesn't have it too badly and that his recovery is quick.

Thanks Ef.  According to his doctor, early detection is key to recovery.  The longer the disease has to progress, the more severe the symptems and the longer the recovery period.  Brother is currently on a three week course of antibiotic.  Ted

I've had several ticks this year and almost all of them have been so small you can hardly see them, even smaller than seed ticks??? After coming too the house from doing farm chores or working bees i go straight too the shower and afterwords check for ticks. They are so small this year i won't find some of them till i start itching, but usually i find them before bed time.Thinking about getting Guineas again, been lucky so far. Jack

From the little experience I've had with ticks, the best way to discover them is in the shower.  The few times I've found them has been while soaping up or washing off under the water.  I'm one of those people who don't feel their bite and until I touch an unfamiliar bump on my skin, I'm totally unaware of their presence.

i have been treated for and suffered from lymes disease and suffered from long term effects of lymes. many antibiotic treatments and did not work.  most people respond well to antibiotic treatment/s, i did not.

sometimes all the best prevention and/or looking for these buggers and getting them off doesn't always keep you safe, but as soon as you find them on you, get them off.  and get to a doctor for a lymes test if you have had any redness or swelling after removal, or other abnormal skin reaction; or if you experience any other unusual health anomalies you have never experienced before.  might start out feeling like a bad flu, or having mononucleosis, mine (a couple of  examples) were extreme fatigue and severe muscular/ joint aches. if you develop a 'bullseye' or 'donut' type looking reddish rash........ or two, or three or more wherever on your skin....it's probably lymes. doesn't always happen right away, might take weeks to develop.

ted, i wish your brother well, not fun the antibiotics and i hope he does well on them!

Spray yourself and your clothes.  I don’t like using the stuff but it’s better than the alternative.  I know so many folks that have been bit and they are never outdoors like I am (sun up to sun down), so don’t think you’re safe anywhere.  I was sitting in a friends house and felt something drop on my head ......a tick!

i guess i'm lucky for some reason? i have been bit and pulled hundreds of ticks off my body over the years and been stung by most every type bug with a stinger, but never had a case of poison Ivy??? Maybe my different type of blood, O RH Negative ???  Even been bit twice by the Fiddle back spider but got to the doctor before any skin damage. The only skin damage i've had is when Mom had a limb off a peach tree and had hold of one of my arms and we were going in circles and my BUTT was her target. :o  :D
