Just a quick question. I have gotten into collecting and restoring cast iron cookware. along with cooking with it. How many on the forum is into this if any. I have set up lye baths and electrolysis tanks to clean and restore iron. There is a guy who makes crisbee to seeason pans with beeswax and lye is used in soaps so may be a good descussion for us keeps posting and active on the board

I have collected some to use and hang on the wall,I cook mostly with cast iron.
I now just look for ones to upgrade what I have but I am cheap,so many times I pass on the nice ones.
I have a friend that cleans out houses and every once in a while he finds some, I have him save them now for me because
he was taking them to the recycling plant,he thought they were worthless.

Just like bringing cast iron cookware back from the dead I am bring back this long dead thread.
I find it satisfying to cook waffles in a 100 year old Griswold cast iron waffle iron. The older Griswold, Wagner, and Volrath skillets are great to cook in also.

We use one or two to cook with, one is old passed down through the family but has always been in use so there has been no need for restoration.

My last purchase was a griddle - advertising piece. I got it at a yard sale for $1. It was in great shape, so it appeared, but has now been relegated to wall hanger status as it has about a 6" hairline crack 3/4 way across the bottom.

rat, i love cast iron, from stove top, to oven, campfires and even grill with cast iron. i have a number of cast iron skillets and griddles. each for whatever the recipe calls for or i want to use!.......... :D
i have had most of my cast iron for well over 25 years, some newly acquired, and a lid or two. i did have to restore one griddle pan some years back........my son took it outside for, okay never mind, ....... :D and i didn't find it until very late the following spring, after the snow melted. pretty rusty.
still using that piece today.

Count me in as well. I have been collecting cast iron for about four years now. I prefer using electrolysis tanks in cleaning up my purchases. Yes it is nice to view and look at nice seasoned pieces in antique shop BUT I prefer to purchase rusty caked on gunky cast iron for a few bucks and restoring them to their prior glory days. :)

Neil this ia a fraction of the collection. I think I have 150 to 160 waffle irons most are hard to find with a few common pieces and probably another 100 to 150 other piece in collectors condition like dutch ovens, skillets, muffin pans, etc I dont have up for display yet

We got plenty to eat. Or it's a fear of cast iron fever spreading

Riverrat,
If I showed up with Sweet Wife, I might be going home alone!
-
rat, you selling any of this........or are you just hoarding?!............. :D
-
The ones I have counted are in the collection and in top shape. I do sell a few when I find a better piece or buy several pieces to get a piece I'm wanting

I'm picking up a piece on way to St Louis Tuesday that surfaced only one known to exist that is complete. Before there was a paddle know and listings in catalogs it a 2 paddle Wagner commercial corn dog maker makes 4 corn dogs. Others that are known to exist was single paddle not double. I could have set up a small apiary for price of this one
