Serious as a heart attack
« on: May 19, 2018, 12:23:00 am »
For women.

3Reds's childhood and current best friend is in the hospital tonight after suffering a heart attack.

She went to the ER on Wednesday with nausea and vomiting.  She told them she thought it was either the salad she'd eaten for lunch or stress.  Her husband has been in the hospital for the last two weeks due to his own health problems.

They sent her home with meds for the nausea that didn't work.  This morning, she was feeling pain radiating down her arm, so she went back to the ER.  They told her she "might" be having a heart attack.
Her doctor wanted to do an angiogram and said she might have a partial blockage somewhere.  It turned out that two of her arteries are totally blocked, one is mostly blocked, and the fourth is partially blocked.  According to 3Reds, he was surprised she was still alive.

I'm sure you beekeepers of the female persuasion are already aware that women sometimes have more subtle symptoms than men.  Being the caregivers that you are, many of you also tend to put off taking care of yourselves in order to care for those around you.

I thought I'd share this video as a reminder:

I wish 3Red's friend the best!  That is scary.
That is a terrific video.  So typical!  "You can be here in 2 minutes?  Can you make it 10?"

Just an update on 3Red's friend.

It wasn't pain in the arm that sent her back to the ER.  She didn't identify that until in the hospital, just before her angiogram.

It was what she thought was acid reflux that hadn't responded to treatment.

The doctors figured out that she had driven herself from Rockport to Portland, a 30 mile trip, while having a heart attack.

She had triple bypass surgery late Monday evening, and is now in a lot of pain from the surgery, but is recovering.

Doctors said she was somehow getting blood to all parts of her heart that needed blood, and don't think she has any damage to the heart muscle.

That was thoughtful of you to provide that link---I think we all need to be reminded of things we think we know but might not know well enough.None of us is getting younger.  It's nice to think that because we are active as beekeepers, we have some protection but  no one is guaranteed to be immune to possibly having a heart attack.

According to a MAAREC Beekeeper Survey, by Elizabeth Burdick and Dewey Caron,  the average age of beekeepers in the United States is 57.   :'(

Wman, as of last December, I am now a stented woman, 61 yrs. I was getting some of these symptoms in the vid. Fortunately I was schooled on heart attack symptoms for women a few years back. And also fortunate, I got to the doc before the heart attack took it's revenge. Three arteries blocked. Genetic for me, both mom and dad had heart attacks. I'm a plaque builder. Love this vid, and put it onto my facebook page. Thanks!

I’m glad you recognized your symptoms and are still around to keep us company on the forum.

Baker "According to a MAAREC Beekeeper Survey, by Elizabeth Burdick and Dewey Caron,  the average age of beekeepers in the United States is 57"

Wait a gosh darned minute here! It's been my understanding that beekeepers live well into their 90's. We get weird but we are strong and healthy in the elder years, that's my plan anyway.  ;D 8)

I don't think she is referring to life expectancy.  Just the average age of current beeks.

Which is pretty cool, since it means that at least in one thing I am "Above Average"!   :occasion14: :eusa_dance: :occasion14:
