Yogi # 3
« on: September 04, 2018, 09:47:01 am »
Well this has been some year. >:(
Twice I have been hit by bear, another paid a second visit to a yard it had hit the week before, and today I got a call from a yard that is at the other end of my yards distance wise. They had told me several weeks ago that there was "bear talk" among other neighbours in the area so I pre-emptively set up fence using a smaller 6 D cell battery fence charger. A bear visited last night and tried in 2 separate areas of the fence and then gave up, but not before leaving a calling card much like the one Robo had visit. :D Judging by the size of his calling card I am glad I wasn't there at the time.

This is the proximity from his leavings to the hives.

1st attempt.

2nd attempt.

Calling card. Obviously it was into some berries somewhere. ;D

I have to admit that I am somewhat impressed that this smaller D cell fencer stopped this bear.

He's probably trying to tell you something like "I'll be back."

Yeesh... when we check bees in Maine we carry a 458 Winchester... JUST... in case.

So... did you pick up that pile to see how fresh it was?

Nope, I left it where it was "dumped". Any bigger and I was thinking my truck might get hung up though. :o

darn brooks, you beat me to it.
you might want to use metal T posts & barbed wire. there are insulators that will work with barbed wire & it's a lot stouter.
here's some hdwe. for gates.

barbed wire? this is not always a good thing, and not a good choice.... other critters can and will get shocked and tangled up in barbed wire besides bears and it ain't pretty.

kencove and most states/dnr are not recommending electrifying barb wire to keep bears out, smooth wire works just as well.

rober, i do use the kencove spring gate handles, they work great!

Got yet another visit (#5) in another yard that I put fence up. After the last yard got hit and then visited again a week later, I decided that perhaps buying one more  fencer and installing on my next yard further down the Ridge might be prudent. Looks like it paid off. No damage to any hives but looks like he/she got caught up a bit and took some of the wire and insulators right off the posts and left them draped over a couple hives.
17 years = nadda. This year 5 visits and 2 hits. The season opened up to bows this week and in another 2 weeks black powder. Hopefully it will drive them deeper into the woods and away from my yards.

Do you think it is the same bear making all of the visits?  I think 99 times out of 100 you can ward off the bear with non-lethal means.  But it seems that there will be one bear that just doesn't get it, or doesn't care when it comes to free groceries.

Thankfully, we do not have bears on a regular basis here.  We do have one wander through Iowa every 5 to 10 years, but I have never heard of bear damage here.

What I have a problem with is the little cousin of the bear.  Raccoons, once they find the chicken coop they are almost impossible to stop by non lethal means.  So far I have not had a problem with raccoons in the bee yards, other than knocking over external sugar syrup jars.

We are getting a lot more sightings here this year than at any time previous. It is possible that 1 bear is responsible for 3 of the visits but the other 2 are at the other end of the valley

Cycles that produce changes in wildlife are interesting to observe.  You never know which direction your bear sightings will go.  They may trail off or increase.  I hope your electric fences work for you Perry, and that you and your bees are safe from hungry bears!

The coywolf, bear, and cougar populations in our area show ebbs and flows as they are (re)populating areas where they were formerly seldom or never seen in modern times.  Bear reports are still 100 miles from us, but it is probably a matter of time until a lone bear wanders through.  We even had a ten foot alligator not five miles from us!
