Title: Alaska The Last Frontier extractor redo
Post by: Bakersdozen on November 20, 2016, 10:19:06 am
I posted this here because the program is about Alaskan homesteaders.  Last night's Thanksgiving episode was about the food on the table and the work it took to get it there.
Several members of the Kilcher extended family have honey bee colonies.  Eivin and Eve provided the turkey basted in honey.  The program showed the couple harvesting honey with their hand cranked extractor.  The hand crank was on the top.  I couldn't tell what the brand name was but it was small and only held 2 or 3 frames.  In true Kilcher form, Eivin decided the hand crank was inefficient and modified the extractor.  He disassembled a bicycle and welded the scaled down components of the bike to the extractor so that is was pedal powered.  Then the program showed Eve, who was pregnant at this time, pedaling away extracting the honey.
Another episode show Eve and her talents as a meade maker.

Network shows plenty of reruns, Les.  Probably will be repeated next Thanksgiving.
