Hello From Mid West Ohio
« on: February 06, 2015, 07:48:17 am »
Found your website via looking for best ways to make Hand Holds on my hives.  (I will post my results in a thread I found here later)  I am a second year beekeeper and am part of WCOBA (Western Counties of Ohio Beekeepers Assoc).  My first year (last year was that cold one) I started with 3 hives via Nucs and once they filled 3 boxes I moved them to 8 frame deeps.  Did not take any honey that year to ensure they made it through the winter.  That did not happen, lost all of them.  This past summer I purchased 4 nucs and caught two swarms.  One of these swarms was a late catch so they are being overwintered in a Nuc.  As a month ago all 6 were still buzzing.  This weekend here will be warm enough that I will go out and clean out the entrances and see if any are flying around and stretching their wings.

Hope to have some good conversations with you all and lear from the experts, even if you dont consider yourself one.....lol  I am always open to hear from those who have been doing this longer then me, and on fewer for that matter.

 :welcome:
Glad you found us. We're a pretty friendly group, and we don't mind questions, so let 'em fly.
There are also a few of us that have branched out into making a lot of our own gear, so if you have any additional ideas, feel free to throw them out there.

Welcome Jason, unfortunately losing hives is part of the bk'n game. Last winter, came thru with losing one hive out of 12, this year have lost 10 out of 20. I have my ideas what went wrong, mostly my fault, but hey, pick up the pieces and move on!
And please do post your ideas on wooden ware!
It's not a honeybee, it's a honey bee. Whateveer!

Yes, I was aware lost is part of the job, that is why I started with three in hopes that at least one made it thru.  As of today all six hives were still buzzing.

Welcome to the forum, Jason.  Beekeepers with an optimistic way of looking at things are always welcome additions to the conversations here.
Now that your  bad "beginner's luck" (  ) has run out, you should be ready to make up for lost time this year ----provided the weather, the flowers, the neighbors, the......you name it   help  you along.
Bees are always a challenge, and we have to be accepting of the bum luck as well as the bumper crops.
Good questions are always a start in the right direction.  Don't get upset if you find that sometimes the answers you get don't all agree with one another.  That just shows you the complexity of beekeeping and emphasizes the need for your optimism.

Welcome aboard and sounds like you are a beekeeper that is going to make it.  I had problems when I first started but by asking questions, joining a local bee club and learning from my mistakes,  things seem to fall in place.  Just hang in there, your own honey is a 100% better than any you can buy.
