Hello, from Middle TN on the KY border.
« on: June 12, 2015, 08:49:42 pm »
My wife and I started this bee keeping adventure spring 2014. Her idea, I just do what the voices in her head tell her to tell me to do!  :D  Been a real brain teaser so far. We read the books, watched youtube, read the forums, and everything else Google brought up. It's a wonder our four hives have survived. No, really. We studied ourselves into confusion. And....seems that bee keeping is part art and part science? The science part seems questionable.

Things were simple in the beginning. Started two hives and did most things right. Everything since then has been questionable. Things ranging from comical to criminal to just unfortunate. Expenses have really racked up, too. But hey! We did get 11qts of the finest honey we have ever tasted this past week!

This hobby suits us. Hopefully, you good people will get us on course. Oh yeah, we also joined the local bee associations.

Welcome to the forum!

Well now, what is it you have done wrong so far?
You still have bees that are living and you have harvested honey, it can't be all bad.

Tell us more of your adventure, and yes beekeeping does have a steep learning curve.
Bees are bees and do as they please!

Or in my case, part fly by the seat of my pants.  Welcome to the forum!

You sound like our kind of people. Ready to work and learn, but have a few laughs along the way. WELCOME.

I'm sure my bees have fixed more of my mistakes than I've fixed of theirs. ;D  As you go, you'll figure out what works for you.  If your not sure of what to do, post it on the forum.  This forum has great members willing to share what works for them.  In the meantime ...let the bees be bees.

For me, I can't figure out if it's a hobby or an obsession... lol

Welcome!  The taste of real honey is what propelled me into the craft.  Besides that, I am really interested in the science and community behind bee colonies.

Welcome and enjoy your stay!  :)  Where in Middle TN are you?  Nashville, Clarkville?  Cookeville?  Yorktown?  What associations did you join?  There's a good one in Cookeville that I get newsletters from.

Make yourself at home and enjoy the great company and advice here!  :)

welcome aboard and I suspect you adventure in beekeeping is much like many folks new to this craft.  I myself don't look at beekeeping as anything arty (god forbid I should be accused of that!).... there is a bit of science and certainly slight changes in CONTEXT can make two thing that look quite the same turn out to be totally different (in cause and end results) .  You may find that my buddy iddee and I disagree in lot of thing in the world but the one thing I SUPECT we have in common is we don't purposefully make something complex that is in fact simple.  I also suspect many of the folks that you find here employ the same 'keep it simple' attitude.

Beeutiful--- it was GREAt to read your post---allow me some quotes: "My wife and I",  "we", "us".  That says it all---if the two of you are in this adventure together, nothing you do can be wrong.   Or, said differently,  The family that keeps (bees) together, keeps together.
Forget your mistakes,  learning the art of beekeeping together with one another can't be beat for a real family experience.  It's worth much more than what you might spend on the hobby.
Stick with us and we hope that in some small way we can be of assistance---but always remember, you've started the right way and moving together is the best guarantee for success.   :occasion14: :bee:
