Title: Bees not touching the 3rd row of grafts?
Post by: Yankee11 on March 30, 2016, 09:00:09 pm
I am on my 2nd round of grafts. I have a couple new frames with 3 rows of cups.

Both times they have not touched the bottom (3rd row) of grafts. Not a single cup. Anyone else use 3 rows or had this problem?

used 2 different starter hives.

Have grafted twice on 3 rows. Took fine on all 3 rows. Maybe reduce your entrance, and put it on one side.

What Iddee said. I also wonder about the spacing below your third row?  Is the bottom bar closer to the cups?

what kind of cell starter are you using and do you also use a finisher?  Or are you going the queen right set up with a cloake board?

I use a 5 frame swarm box for starting cells and on most occasions not starting cells is about the population of bees in the box.  Same goes for finishers.... which is to say if less cells get finished it normally is always about hive population (and of course nutrition to some degree).

I used a cloak board on first 2 frames. Then the 2 time I used a 10 frame deep that was queenless but it was crowded.

On both instances the bottom bar would have been close to a open entrance/ no reducer.

Curious? how many cells do you start in a starter nuc box?
