Title: Candle Making, Molds Too
Post by: Marbees on January 14, 2014, 11:33:57 pm
It took me more than a year to start making candles. Whenever I saw my candle molds, that I had ordered from Mann Lake, I would tell to myself, man find some time, it could be fun. :) Finally around 5th of December I pulled out my wax and molds, made some really nice candles, bee skeps, tapers, wax bars, votives, Christmas trees.... I really enjoyed them, they were burning nicely, and I could smell my beehives. ;D They made great Christmas presents to my friends, neighbours and family.
Then I started thinking, what if I make some candle molds of my own, would those be called  Marbees candles? ;D
This is what I got so far

It's not very complicated, there are all kinds of products on the market, and videos on youtube.
Here is what I used

Got it from Smooth-On Toronto dealer. You may want to visit their site, and let imagination fly :)
They have some nice videos on "How To"...

Looks good. Had to think you where using silicone. Urethane would not be plyable enough to release some of the objects you made into candles. Thank for the link to the new products and supplier in Canada. I can get urethane in smaller size quantitys here locally only.

You are welcome.
You are right Apis, it's a silicone rubber, which I prefer over the urethane that you have to spray every time before you cast.
And with my memory... :D
Stuff I used is 30 shore hardness, next batch I'll go with OOMOO 25 (25 shore) which, I believe is hardness Mann Lake is using.
Then I'll know what's going to be my first choice.
Also, one of the things to think about is a size of the wicking, so far I used only 2/0 and #60, based on the size and diameter of candles pretty much simplified by Mann Lake. I think by using sizes between those mentioned could improve a burning time on some of the candles.
So, there is a lot of candle burning and testing ahead.  :)
