We are going into our 3rd winter up here in Marengo Wi. We are raising and keeping our own bees. We are working at being treatment free. We are Non- Migratory beekeepers, keeping our bees year round in the Frozen North. We went from 14 overwintered Colonies this past spring, losing 1 over the 2015/16 winter.
Since Memorial Day, we have sold 12 Nucs, and now have 30+ colonies with Our own Queens and in the process of Queens being mated. Will have an accurate count by August, how many colonies have mated Queens and then, will get them ready for winter.
We are currently overwintering here in single, 10 frame deeps...We have 3, 5 frame Nucs will will be wintering. Next year building 50 more 5 frame Nucs. Over wintering them as dbl nucs or 5/5 which is 25 Nucs being added to our yard..

I hope you have a good backup feeding plan for years that the weather does not cooperate with bees surviving the harsh winters and cold wet spring weather keeps the bees from taking syrup.

Thanks and I do have feeding methods for these. I model after other beekeepers who keep bees the same way as we do. Should be good...Thanks...

congrats on the good numbers for overwintering! what breed/strain of bees? are you rearing your own queens?

Hi again Charlie.
I'm going to have to re-mark 2 of those Old Sol queens I got. Losing their white mark, maybe they were marked & put back before they were dry. I noticed one was already laying, that's 3 days after being put into the hive with her attendants. :occasion14:

my guess is the bees cleaned the white mark off.....

1967 was a good year for me it that is exactly the time line when I walked out of the strawberry field and move on to the large state university. I soon learned the world and people were much different than anything I could have possibility imagined.
My wife and I just got back from a trip to Wisconsin where we stayed with the student's parents and had to opportunity to see the area and look into a few hives. Plus we did a drive by of the grave stone of a Mr Grimm who seems to have been the person who brought Italian bees to the US. Lots of that northern tier country habitat has changed quite dramatically and imho not necessarily for the better as far as a bee is concerned.

Man on man, could I ever be a cheesehead. I love cheese and always have. My family had an old cousin that lived in Wisconsin decades and decades ago. She worked where cheese was made. She brought back a recipe for cheese, and some of my earliest happy memories were of her cheese. On special occasions mom would make me cheese toast with my breakfast. It was indescribably good. In short, I could be a cheesehead, except for the fact that I am a sissy and couldn't take the winters.
Anyway, you are in good bee country with lots of good beekeepers in your state, and again, welcome aboard.

Thanks for sharing the good ole memories you have of Wi. Cheese is a biggie here for sure. Winters get a little more brutal and longer up here just 15 miles south of the Great Lake, Superior. We love it though! Raising our bees to be genetically able to live up here and selling them as fast as we can grow, and loving the challenge. Going into our 3rd winter with 27 hives after busting 40 this summer. Sold 14 off them and have all 27 sold for next year + 15 for 018 already. Fun in the sun. 8)

RiverBee, Our Bees are officially recognized by the State of Wi. as Marengo, Mutts. Their a mix of packages from Calif. and Russian/ Carniolans we got in Nucs. from a local beekeeper. We since bought 3 more Honey Bee Genetic Queens, again being Russian Carniolans. We really do like the way they work up here in Northern Wi.
We do raise our own Queens. This year we raised 50+ and next year looking at 75+. Mostly to requeen our own and to sell to locals, pickup only.
Had to lookup where El Paso, Wi is as I never heard of that one. We know some beekeepers down there. In fact, some from that part of the State have come up to see our Apiary.

LOL mutts! i love it! mutts are it! i get russkies from the rhba, and raise a few queens but they essentially at some point turn out to be and are 'riverbee's mutts' and are not recognized by the state of wisconsin........... :D :D :D
there is something about the russians and russian/carni mix that i have experienced that gives us a little advantage for our winters.
el paso.........it's a township just outside of ellsworth, you are (marengo) about 3- 3 1/2 hours just n/ n/e of me. less if you speed........but i don't like speeding tickets....... :D
wondering which of the guys down here (ellsworth area) have come up to see you.........? just curious. you can send me a pm.
might have to keep you in mind for queens!!! willing to drive up and get them!

Had an inspection by the State for my health certificate and they asked what breed of bee we had so we came up with M&M's.
Would love for you to come up and see our operation and get some Q's from us. While you're here, you can teach me a thing or two.
