Title: Presentation for 4th graders
Post by: Bakersdozen on September 05, 2017, 05:42:31 am
After I finish my shift as the lunch lady, I will be heading to the 4th grade to do a presentation on honey bees.  It should be around 75 students.  I think I am prepared.  Building on my experience, speaking to kids a couple of months ago, I am probably overly prepared.  The students are currently studying honey bees  and one of the teachers saw some equipment in the back of truck.  Should be fun!

This sort of thing is easy when the subject matter is something you are so obviously passionate about. The problem you'll have is knowing when to stop. :)
I was never comfortable doing any public speaking until I started doing the bee thing. Now I don't shut up! ;D

The 4th graders were a lot of fun!  3 classrooms combined into one to get in on the presentation.  They have been studying honey bees and beekeeping.  I dressed two of the students up in gear, explaining what and why as we went.  Then I assembled a hive, explaining each step.  I used a power point presentation to talk about what they can do to help honey bees.  I also promoted the local bee club and it's youth scholarship program.  Then I had flyers from the National Honey Board and HONEYSTICKS for everyone!
Many questions and some of them were very good!  I had talked about how the drones are kicked out in the fall, workers only last about 6 weeks but forgot to mention the life span of the queen.  One boy asked about the life span of the queen.  A few moments later asked, "But how do they get a new queen?"  Bright boy!  C:-)
