Brood in the honey supers
« on: August 16, 2014, 08:06:52 am »
:o I didn't use queen excluders this year, and some of the queens laid up in the honey supers. In hind-sight I should have added excluders a month ago.The good news is I made up 5 nucs. This nuc was made last Sun.and the pic was from Fri.

I don't know.It was like that when I got here.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but it looks to me like you have queen cells with larva in them. Looks like emergency queen cells or supercedure

these were frames from supers from other hives that the queen laid up into......so jb made 5 ? nucs with these frames.....my guess is it was his intention for the bees to rear queens from these frames, rather than introducing a queen......jb?

Could be that they were so high up in the honey supers they started raising a seperate queen? When I seperated my honey supers with an excluder after the queens had already laid up there, they raised new queens above the excluders.

Perry, so what do you do when that happens? will the hive then be operating with two queens? one upstairs and one downstairs?

jen, sometimes without queen excluders the queens will lay up in them, the first honey super.... sometimes you discover this and put an excluder on to find later you have two queens. one upstairs, one downstairs, not saying how i discovered this....... :D

but, i do think from jb's posts, he may have been taking advantage of the queen laying up in his honey supers with fresh eggs, nucs were made with the frames for the bees to make their own queens, just my guess, and when jb gets back in here......oh jb!!!! hello!!!!..... :D

Yes, I was hoping for queen cells.I wanted to do some cell punch queens but I've been too busy this summer.I think I leave them alone till sat. then I can check on them.I'll probably put push cages over them and make some more nucs.I probably have 15-20 cells.
I don't know.It was like that when I got here.

I have had two hives that did just that recently. I used a queen from one for another hive, and I seperated the other and formed a seperate colony which I put in my friend Henry's year round indoor observation hive..

Wow, it gets even better. My honey extractor called and I have over 400# of honey this year.He had to go buy 4 more 5 gal buckets. If most of these queens turn out ok it will be a blue ribbon summer. And yes Rodmaker, these are emergency queen cells.I intended to make some cell punch queens, but didn't make the time for it.
I don't know.It was like that when I got here.

No problem Jen.And Lazy I don't want an extractor because  they mean more work.I pick up my honey and I'm done, no cleaning sticky mess.Besides my guy spent money for all the equipment and I want to help support him,but mostly I'm lazy and don't want any more work. :D

I dunno jb....  :-\  I don't know how to do anything without working hard for it. If I extract and bottle the honey.. it just tastes better to me. Like picking blackberries in the morning, making the pie in the afternoon, and serving that pie with purple fingers and a scoop of ice cream. Best Tasting Pie EVER!
