I have not been active for a number of years, but I see quite a few familiar names on here. I used to run 40-50 hives and had a honey sales route and worked full time. After the second heart attack I had to let the bees go. Still have a couple and all the fixings for about 10-15 hives. Bought a place on the coast and seeing the flow potential, I can't stand it. Got a location last weekend for hives. Now I just have to build for next year. I run an odd size for most of ya'll, 8 frame 7 5/8. Old fashioned, but I do all my own woodwork. Rick

Welcome to the forum. Nice to see you remembered us and have checked back in.
I know 6 3/8 deep foundation is available (most likely Special Order now) Was carried by a few suppliers when I started keeping bees. My question is, do you use foundation or go foundation-less?
Member Chip Euliss uses 7 5/8" supers for honey, about 20% lighter than a 9 5/8" super. with you dropping down to 8 frames You have reduced the weight of a full super by about 40%. Not a bad Idea as we get older.

Welcome back, RAST. We look forward to hearing about your adventures in Florida beekeeping.

First and foremost---we're glad to hear that you are recovered from your heart attacks and well enough to get back to bees.
Enjoy the action as a hobby and remember not to overdo it.
As my age creeps up on me, I find my body telling me to take it easy with the hives. This year I have seven, but when it came to taking off the spring honey, I decided to avoid the heavy lifting and took my full frames into the extracting room in a nucleus hive with only 3 or 4 frames inside. True, it means more trips back and forth, but I do it slowly. I also decided not to take off as much honey as I could have. Since I don't sell any, just distribute to family and friends, I don't succumb to the unnecessary pressure of wanting every drop I can get from the girls.
I guess that leaves them happier too, having more reserves inside the hive.

Welcome to the forum Rick Long time no see. Remember you from a couple of forums way back in the day. Iddee started the forum along with my help, G3farms, perry, and Riverbee. We grew it into what I would call the most bee friendly forum on the net. Hope to see you around

Thanks all. apisbees, I used to cut the foundation into 1" strips and tack it into the top of the wired frames. This time I am trying the "Popsicle stick"method with some plastic in between. Riverrat, yep and don't forget Tec.
