I was so excited and enjoyed it soo much! The rain started as soon as we finished! I gave them a hive top jar of sugar water to hold them over!

I have a question about what to do next; is there a certain amount of time to keep them apart from the mother hive or can I just set them in the same area? I read something about this, but can't seem to find it! thanks Judy

Congrats on your first :) But I thought that you weren't supposed to feed them the first 3 days because there's the risk they'll leave the hive again?

Can you expand on that a bit more Vossejongk?

I always make sure theres a feeder on newly hived packages/swarms/cutouts, so looking to learn a bit here.

vosse - ""But I thought that you weren't supposed to feed them the first 3 days because there's the risk they'll leave the hive again?""

Hi vosse  :)  I haven't heard that one yet, but what I did was not feed them for a couple of days while the new swarm colony rested in the new hive box. When they swarm they have gorged on honey anyway. Then when I put the hive in place I start feeding.

HOWEVER! You know about my crazy wondering bees, just sayin  ;) 8)

During my in the field lessons there actually was a swarm and I was the lucky one to get it. In the evening I thought it would help to give them sugarwater so I went back and gave them 2L of 1:1.  2 Days later I went to check if they settled in and the hive was completely empty of bees, only the frames and foundation were left and untouched.  My teacher said it was because I fed them too fast. No idea why that caused them to leave..

I put my swarm on the other end of the stand I have for the hives and put feed 1 to 1 sugar water and they are doing fine, working up a storm.

You might consider keeping them closed up in the box for a couple of days to become acquainted with their new home.  Or I've heard of people putting a queen excluder under the box so that the workers can come and go, but the queen will stay, and this keeps the hive from absconding.  I haven't tried either one, so these are only suggestions.

I would like to know why your instructor teaches that. I've noticed that if I keep them in the hive for a couple of days without feeding... then set them out, that they don't take the syrup for a couple of more days, then they gobble it up.

Also, LazyBkpr suggested that when I put a swarm in a box, to add a frame of brood (if you have it), this works like a anchor to give the bees something to take care of while closed up in the hive. I do also put an excluder under the bottom deep for 3-4 days to keep the queen in place.  So far, it has worked in the swarm hives. But I never know from day to day what I'm gonna find next  ;) 8)

Slow- ""You might consider keeping them closed up in the box for a couple of days to become acquainted with their new home.  Or I've heard of people putting a queen excluder under the box so that the workers can come and go, but the queen will stay, and this keeps the hive from absconding.  I haven't tried either one, so these are only suggestions.""

This system seems to work for me, so far. In the closed up hive, the bees ball up under the lid and around the queen and get closely connected with her pheromones. Then is there is an added frame of brood the bees will want to take care of it during that time of enclosure.

Hello Vosse,

I am going to guess that the bees did not leave because you fed them. Maybe they didn't like the comb you gave them or the lack of comb? You never know. I too, have had a swarm leave not once but twice before I finally convinced them I was not all that bad. LOL  8) I was lucky that each time they swarmed they only went a few feet and I noticed them pretty quickly. I have ALWAYS fed my swarms. Sometime (most times) they take my feed and other times they ignore it. maybe it depends if there is a nector flow on or other natural resources they would rather have than my 'ol suger water.  ;)

Jim, I can agree with that, when it comes to swarms I feel they already have an agenda that we may not understand. It's always a gamble ~

The Queen excluder underneath is a simple but brilliant idea, I'm going to use that :)
