Title: Cut Out Equipment To Take Along
Post by: Jen on July 04, 2014, 12:30:47 pm
Where on this forum is the thread that has all the suggestions for tools and equipment to take along on cut outs, swarms, trap outs?

I couldn't find it Jen, but we could always ask one of our wonderful moderator's to place a sticky at the top of the cutout section and let us add stuff to it.

Let's do it tbone, I find that list to be invaluable, especially for newbee's. I'll send Riverbee a pm  ;)

add a scoop made from a half gallon plastic jug with handle, like a milk jug or juice jug. I sure could have used one and didn't have on my last one.

A pail of water.  :)

A pail of water.  :)

Definately..   Otherwise the sticky mess will overwhelm you..

   Some good suggestions..
If there is no power I take my generator.  Ladder, hive tool..  Invaluable for cutting comb from walls and scraping walls clean. A good knife..  I use a filet knife and my hive tool almost exclusively. I have a shorter table knife and a bowie style combat knife but dont often use either..
A trash can to put garbage bags in.. Otherwise you are struggling with the garbage bag to open it every time you want to put a piece of comb into it.. the garbage can holds the bag open and up.. Makes life VERY much easier..
You will need a cats paw and hammer. A flat bar or two to get the batton and boards off. A long filet knife to cut the comb free before you pull the boards away from the walls. Empty frames and rubber bands for the brood comb. At least two boxes worth just in case.
A queen clip is a bonus..  Having the queen in a clip is always a super feeling... If no clip she can be carefully caught and allowed to be sucked directly into the hive/beevac without bouncing through the hose. If no BeeVac she can be put directly into the hive with the brood combs, just use care with her.  Shake some bees from cut comb in with her, they usually stay.
Smoker to herd the bees along and calm them..  As Perry said, a bucket of water to wash.... everything...   a rag to dip in the bucket to wipe things down with, because somehow.. EVERYTHING gets sticky....

Curious, what about a queen excluder between bottom board and deep, like I did with the swarms, kept the queen in the hive for 2-3 days...?

cordless drill, the battons have some screws along with nails.

Queen cage her then you can be certain they will stay. Smallish queens can slip through excluders.

If you don't have a queen clip reuse a queen cage your queens came in. a little more tricky to get her in it but doable if you dont have the cork to close the hole a mini marshmallow will work.

Meaning to leave her in the clip, between the frames, for a couple of days?

and the thread is here.......
 Swarm Kit (http://www.worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/index.php/topic,1761.msg23510.html#msg23510)

and it's been stickied, and so has this one. ;D
i think it's a great idea to have two separate threads devoted to each topic separately, one on what we carry to collect swarms, and one for what we carry for cutouts, and since jen started this thread, lets just use this one to devote to cut outs.

roller cages work great for this......much easier to get the queen in vs the benton or jzbz cages..(robo has a pic of these here somewhere too)

queen clip or queen cage, yes, but it is often hard to find the queen during a cutout.  I judge whether I've got her by the bees behavior.

This is my queen clip, Amazon.com. ~ I haven't had the opportunity to use it yet, but it seems sturdy enough and the spring isn't too tight

When we get the bees and queen into his brand spankin new hive/bottom board/lid/rubber banded frames.... should I put a queen excluder between the bottom board and hive box for a couple of days? I sure would hate to see them obsond ~

definitely go with the queen excluder. I lost a 6 lb swarm after they started taking feed as soon as I opened the door because I DIDN"T use an excluder.

I would not use the excluder myself, the brood and young hatching bees will hold them in place. I just leave the bee vac base on them for a couple of days. I think the biggest thing is to leave them alone for a couple of days to settle in. You have disrupted everything, robbed them of their stores and pretty much demoralized them...........they need some alone time.

Good to hear you say that, I had 10 swarms to contend with this last spring, LazyBkpr taught me how to use the excluder for a hand full of days to help anchor the bees, it worked  ;D

G- "I think the biggest thing is to leave them alone for a couple of days to settle in. You have disrupted everything, robbed them of their stores and pretty much demoralized them...........they need some alone time.

Got that  :)  during my swarm episode once I got the hive placed, I didn't bother them for 7-10 days.

 ;D

A swarm and a cut out are two different animals.
You installed a few frames of their brood in the cut out, that will make it really hard for them to leave..   Guaranteed to stay?  Nothing is guaranteed with bees, but the % would be very high..
If you did or will use a queen excluder.. I really see no issue with it. A little added insurance perhaps. I do not usually use one with a cut out that has brood, but it will not hurt.

Hiya Scott- I took an excluder with me, but kept it in my truck, I dunno, just didn't feel right to add it to the hive. I think it was G3 that said the same as you. Mainly, I really want this hive to work out for my friend. I'm anxious for next Monday to take a peek and see if we were a successful team at hiving these bees.

And by the way, Thanks for always being one of my first responders when I have soo many questions, or venturing into new territory. Your patients is a virtue in my book  ;)

Yes indeed a swarm and a cut out is a totally different set up.
I find the queen excluder is just extra crap to carry when collecting a swarm.
Keep in mind the queens in a swarm have been slimed down so she can fly a bit. I just keep them closed up tight for a day or so to calm down and get a frame of brood to add to them as soon as I open them.

I take a hanger for my comb bucket and a rope to raise and lower it if it is high up and I am working on a ladder. I put a step on the ladder to make a little platform to stand on as my legs and feet can't since I am old take a lot of up and down on the ladder.

I take 3 five gallon pails of water minim one I just rinse in and one has some dish soap in it for the final wash up.
I also like rubber gloves.

I also like rubber bands made from tractor intertubes. I get them from tractor salvage yards normally free for the asking. One 13.9x38 will last a long time.

If they did, they didn't register.  Not that that is a requirement... I just cant sort the spiders and bots form other "guests" that come on here every day....
