Caught swarm.

Land owner was suppose to let me know when bee's hit box. But he didn't . bee's froze.

It was a 5 frame nuc box , I keep going back and slid in straws with cotton balls, with lemon grass oil. Swarm hit box late. No capped brood, looked for Q but couldn't find. This is near a 100 yr old tree with bees

Landowner saved you the money and effort trying to winter them when they didn't have a decent chance of making it.

No capped brood, were the bee's in tree trying to make a inbetween .  stop off . because no capped brood. If a abscond from old tree. Why this late?

Abscond, likely. From the old tree? Check for activity on a warm day. It may have been from somewhere else trying to join the old tree, but was rebuffed.

About only viable thing that could have been done would have been to combine with a weeker hive and that would have been risky

I'll be putting more swarm traps in that area. The old tree is on an old farm with lots of barns and out buildings. I'm sure that tree has cast swarms for years.

Landowner told me tree swarmed late last year. Just seem odd to me.
