Title: What to do with it.
Post by: iddee on April 25, 2014, 05:20:53 pm
If a company buys a few semi loads of vegetables that are fully ripe, and only sell a few in the next few days, what do they do with the rest?  THEY GIVE IT AWAY.

I have access to about 50 baskets of corn, 20 boxes of spaghetti squash, 30 or more boxes of egg plant, okra by the box, cucumbers by the case, and several other veggies.
Two pickup loads so far, and going back Monday. Look out, canners, you are going to be busy.

Don't say it Perry, don't say it. You're better than that, leave it alone!
"But I wants to say it, I wants to".
No! Iddee will hit you with a stick!  C:-)

I know, i know, my son gave me enough crap about having to catch fish and find mushrooms for the old man. :D I've been so busy with garden, bees, and cattle that i can't get away, had a first calf heifer that calfed and the calf was dead and she was paralyzed for 4 days, had to carry feed and water to her and put hip huggers on her and lift her up with the tractor and loader and let her stand to get the blood circulating every day. Didn't want to loose her to. Jack

Pretty good deal there on the eats and treats!

Having a cow down and getting her back up is a HUGE chore, not always successful but keep at it Jack, best of luck for all of the hard work with her. Nothing worse than a dead calf, dead cow, AND a vet bill, let alone all of the hours spent on back breaking labor. Been there, done that, got the vet bill too!

Funny thing, last Friday i took the tractor and hip huggers out to her, as i was trying to put the huggers on her she looked back and seen what i was doing and staggered to her feet, she didn't want anymore of that. :D She has been on her feet ever since and when she sees me outside she comes to me, not that she likes me, she just wants that bucket of grain. Jack

The power a bucket of sweet feed has on a cow is tremendous. Mine will come running for an empty bucket if I just beat on the side of it and go nuts if there is some gravels inside to make noise. Have to watch the back of the truck if there are buckets in it, they will put some pretty good dents in sheet metal. Glad you have things going your way!!

Here, in Kansas City, we have a nonprofit agency called Harvesters.  In such a case as the one iddee is describing, many companies would call Harvesters and Harvesters would pick up that produce.  They are able to quickly turn it around and distribute it to agencies and churches.  It's great to see that iddee was able to get hold of some of that and put it to good use.  It's a shame to waste food when so many go without.

It didn't go to waste. It was advertised on craig's list and it was all gone in 2 days.

My wife is in the basement now canning tomato's and freezing corn (cutting it off the cob).I have been picking melons (cantaloupe and water melons), and Concord grapes to sell at the farmers market tomorrow, and honey off course. We haven't had a rain in three weeks and the watermelon vines are dried up, but i picked some 50lb. and 60lb. watermelons :o. How do you figure that?? Jack

Ef says: "I think you're getting paid back for taking such good care of that unfortunate cow."   :occasion14:
