Very Loud Bees
« on: March 09, 2019, 01:14:46 pm »
I've noticed with these crazy temperature swings that when the bees do come out they are like orientation flights and very loud for about 1-1 1\2 hr.  I'm hard of hearing so i normally don't hear bees until i open hive but this i can hear 2 ft. from hive. When bees orient do bees in box start flapping their wings to push pheromones out ?  After about an hour they're back to normal bringing in pollen.

Bees may be a little louder when flying in cooler temperatures, but there is a good chance you are hearing drones flying during the orientation flights.  They are louder and have a different sound than the workers--a welcome sound to me this time of year.
