I didn't want to let this one slip off into the ether.

I picked up this 1928 Fuller and Johnson 2hp hit and miss engine this past weekend. I've wanted one for a while and now I've got it.

I didn't hear it run, but it had spark and compression when I purchased it.

last night I had a minute to mess around with it so I squirted some fuel in the intake set the needle valve to "S" closed the choke and gave it a spin. It only took two spins of the flywheel to get it to fire and run (briefly). Not bad! 87 years old and it fires right up.

It still needs some cleaning and probably some painting but I love my new "toy"

Wonder what I can get for it to run? corn sheller? cement mixer? Ice cream machine, butter churn, wood splitter? water pump, milking machine?

Used to use them a lot around here on water pumps.. with no load they didnt use a lot of fuel, only firing when necessary to keep the rpm;s up.. when the float level dropped you could hear them kick in and start firing every revolution.. MAN I loved that sound....
We had, and have a lot of windmills, but with the winds we get here, they often damaged themselves spinning too fast. tearing up the pump or shaft. The old hit and miss engines were the cats meow when fuel was less than a quarter a gallon. Mixed with Alcohol and sometimes a little kerosene they still ran well for even less expense.

I like EF's way of thinking.

Im positive that ole cranky engine is going to give you heartburn. How about I come pick it up and store it at my place and save you money on the antacid tablets

Ef, I thought about using an extractor. But as an exhibit, the last thing I want is for a multitude of bees to descend upon the crowd of onlookers.

Watching the video, it seems as if there's a gevernor cutting off the ignition to prevent the motor from developing too much speed and going too fast.

There is a governor. But it actually holds the exhaust valve open once the engine is up to speed. As it slows down the push-rod is released allowing the exhaust valve to seal the combustion chamber. On the next down stroke, since the exhaust valve is closed, there is a now a vacuum which opens the intake valve pulling in the next fuel charge. The flywheels speed up and the push-rod is locked out once again until the slowing flywheel releases it.

Nope, not yet. I have a corn sheller and a winnower on the farm that I could convert into belt drive. Of course there have been a lot of votes for an ice cream machine. I would love to get a log splitter but those are $$$$

When we lived in Lunenburg there were a few old boats that had engines like this. They were referred to as "make and break" engines, and had the most definitive sound as they putted across the harbour.

Ok keith Im telling the wife its your fault I went and traded a few of my old maytag engines that didnt run for this macleod 1 3/4 horse
that is complete and appears like it will be an easy runner

Here in Indiana an old crusty hit n miss with part missing go for $500. I have 2 Maytag hit-n-miss with the old ball muffler. Love to get my hands on a complete motor like you found. I get a chuckle when I fire the Maytag up and see neighbors rubber neck it when driving by.

I might have to dust off the old maytag motor and see if I can trade it for a hit and miss.. I remember playing with those things as a kid.. they used them on water pumps to fill cattle tanks, among other things around here... When I saw a motor in the weeds, I HAD to make it run... The last one I did was the old Ferguson.. (1942 TE) sitting in the weeds since the 80's and was about to be junked... and now she is disking my yard!! Need a new challenge!
