For those attending that will need a hotel, we have added a block of rooms at the Country Inn and Suites in Lawrence, KS. https://www.countryinns.com/lawrence-hotel-ks-66046/usalaka?s_cid=os.amer-us-cis-USALAKA-gmb (https://www.countryinns.com/lawrence-hotel-ks-66046/usalaka?s_cid=os.amer-us-cis-USALAKA-gmb)  This is where our guest speakers will be staying.  Use the code words Beekeepers Funday to get a reduced rate.

We have also added a catered BBQ dinner at the close of the day, 6:30 p.m.  It will be in the central building, Bldg. 21, at the fairgrounds.  The cost is an additional $20 per person.  Our guest speakers will be present for this as well.  It will be a great opportunity to mingle and ask questions.

A tornado touched down last night and tore a path from North Lawrence into Kansas City.  The Red Cross and utility companies are using the fairground for a staging area.  We believe our event will go off as planned.  If there are any changes, I will post here and at www.nekba.org.

Our event was a memorable day.  The weather cooperated, as these photos show.  We had almost 300 in attendance.  Randy Oliver did 4 presentations to large crowds.  A presentation on lotions and balms and What do honey bee colonies rely on in the Great Plains? drew more people than anticipated.  More chairs were brought out for the folks standing in the back of the rooms.
The homemade honey ice cream was fantastic!  There were 5 different flavors and most people wanted a little of all the flavors. I know it sounds funny, but the temperature was in the 90's and steamy, so the ice cream hit the spot.
The swarm demonstration performed by Dr. Chip Taylor, Monarch Watch founder, is always a big hit.  He always tells interesting stories about his honey bee research he did in South America, to the crowd's delight.

This is a picture of Dr. Marion Ellis doing a hive inspection with scholarship students.  He is explaining the various aspects of the comb.
